I've been playing a long time and use tab frequently to help with new songs. Not the worst picker around, but trying to improve in my old age, now that I have more time to play.

Decided to try again to read music...what book(s) would you suggest for an adult to learn to read music for guitar?

Thanks,

Best book I have found is M.I.'s Music Reading for the Guitar. The one JonR mentions above. Really gets the job done well for real life, at the gig and in the studio music reading. I think Hal Leonard distributes it. It is for advanced beginners on up.

3shift! Where ya been man? Nice to see you back round these parts. That is some high praise coming from you two. I will be checking that book out too.

To the OP - The one series I have always used is the William Leavitt Modern Method for guitar Vol I, II, III. It is quite good.

Amazon has it for under $30.00. I would recommend it too.

In my opinion it takes a good book, and some other things to supplement it.

Unfortunately the most effective book I've ever known is now orphaned, and out of print. That would be Howard Roberts Sight Reading Manual For Guitar, which was the text at MI for many years.

Now I would suggest Sight To Sound by Leon White. Couple this with Leavitt's Melodic Rhythms, and you'll have most of what you need.

Next get a spiral bound notebook of staff paper. Every time you encounter a difficult rhythm, write it down. And write down what ever applicable subdivisions

apply. Meaning that a 1/4 note rhythm should be written as 1/2 notes as well (if possible) and 8th and 16ths as well. Practice these rhythms each night slowly with a metronome BEFORE working through the books. After going through the books, be sure to read through the Real Book or some other music. Also, you should read unfamiliar music everyday.

Had this in the '70's......Great book if you can find it. Lent mine out (like so many books) never to return.

Wow! The prices have come down since I last looked. Last time the cheapest price was 99.00

You guys snatched up all the cheap copies didn't you! I'm not paying over $60 for a book.

From a beginner's perspective, "Modern Method for Guitar" by William Leavitt, has been a great resource. It focuses on reading music mostly, and gets into technique later in the book. Highly readable and highly recommended.
