alternate picking sloppiness

a lot of times when i purely alternate pick with no legato cheating between strings my pick will accidently hit the string im supposed to be crossing over as im getting to the next one.... but when im playing loud and distorted it doesnt really register that much (since the string is muted) and actually gives the next note a sort of percussive effect that sounds sort of cool..... so what to do?

Practice the path of the pick SLOWLY. Play an exercise (or a musical piece with appropriate string changes) extremely slowly.... control the path of the pick with your ATTENTION.

Rinse and repeat...

my point is is it even a problem if it sounds good? it only happens when doing fast alt picking

I would say anything that happens outside of your control, is something you should work on getting control of.

It sounds like you have an issue with "outside picking"..where you have to go over the string in order to play it. So, say you're doing Down/Up/Down on the G string, and the next "Up" is on the B string, you have to go over the B to make that upstroke, right?. As others have said, to solve this, you're going to need to slow right down and examine the mechanics of what your pick is doing. If you keep repeating technical mistakes at high speed..you never get rid of them. Try this classic Paul Gilbert exercise:

Strictly Down/Up/Down/Up and loop..isolate the second bit shown in the Tab where you'll be picking Down/Up/Down and then try the whole thing..with a metronome as slow as you can. It's easier to play things fast and sloppy rather than slow and accurate. Find other lines where you need to make that pick movement and do the same thing, isolate that movement and slow it right down.
