Members Darrell_Curtis Posted January 5, 2011 Members Posted January 5, 2011 When playing anything, I notice I always gravitate towards the root. I know the notes on the neck, and I can spell out chords etc. Despite this, when playing, especially when improvising, I think of and lean on the root of a given chord. I actually think that if I didn't know the neck of the guitar, I wouldn't have this problem, because I lean on what I know, not what I hear. Anyone ever have this problem? Anyone have a solution to this dependencecrutch? Thanks.
Members jeremy_green Posted January 5, 2011 Members Posted January 5, 2011 May seem simple Darrell, but sounds like you need to do some limitation exercises for a bit, to get the different sounds in your ears. If it were me, I would outlaw the tonic for a bit - treat it like an avoid note. I have definitely had bouts of that, although typically I have had the opposite problem - not enough tonic resolution. We all have our moments dont we!! Drives you nuts when you come upon the realization. But that is the key to correcting it - the awareness.
Members Darrell_Curtis Posted January 6, 2011 Author Members Posted January 6, 2011 Thanks for the response Jeremy. Simple is not necessarily undesirable, ineffective etc. More and more I find that the solutions to problems are in fact simple.Doesn't mean they don't require time and effort. As I heard someone say, it's simple, but not easy.
