Members jeremy_green Posted January 19, 2011 Members Posted January 19, 2011 That's awesome Sean. Very well presented! Gotta love Stern. Last time I met him he had that grin on his face the whole time and kept patting my back! Funny dude. Truly MONSTROUS player.
Members polishpaul Posted January 19, 2011 Members Posted January 19, 2011 Pretty solid advice. Thanks for posting.
Members [Animals2] Posted January 19, 2011 Members Posted January 19, 2011 nice... i dig your stuff.... i will be checking this out shortly.
Members BassoRidiculoso Posted January 20, 2011 Members Posted January 20, 2011 Great lesson! Did a post and linked to it. Great stuff for bass players, we gotta know the chord tones of a tune if we are going to do a walking line over it.
Members BydoEmpire Posted January 20, 2011 Members Posted January 20, 2011 Very cool and very timely for me, as I've been trying to work on chord tone soloing lately. Thanks for sharing!
Members JesperT Posted January 23, 2011 Members Posted January 23, 2011 Thanks for posting. I'm just going through a chord-tone-soloing phase myself after seeing the Hal Galper-thread Jed posted, so this is great stuff. I've begun learning jazz by starting in the Realbook from "A", so I've just played All of Me, and am now onto Autumn leaves .
Members 3shiftgtr Posted January 24, 2011 Members Posted January 24, 2011 Yeah, If I'm on a jazz gig and they pull up a tune I've never played before, I use chord tones as the majority of the solo. That way you are still "touring" the listener through the changes. Also, if you are reading them as you are soloing over them for the first time, it helps keep you 'out of the woods', so to speak.

Yeah it's a great safety net or a way to dip your toe in the water before you head out to the deeper stuff.

Great site you have by the way, I've been meaning to tell you that for awhile.
Members jeremy_green Posted January 24, 2011 Members Posted January 24, 2011 Thanks as always Jeremy. Great site you have by the way, I've been meaning to tell you that for awhile. Thanks Sean, appreciated coming from a player like you. Be nice to actually have some time to put more stuff up... I guess there really is no pressure other than my own internal kind! Sometimes that's the worst kind of pressure! I'll be reading.

Members ednakayama Posted January 27, 2011 Members Posted January 27, 2011 Cool lesson and nice playing! I agree that it's easy to get caught up in trying to be too hip. When I hear that type of thing (lots of chord tones), I think of people like Sonny Rollins who used themes and phrasing variations to say a lot with a little. The complex stuff is fun to listen to, but it can become too seductive for a lot of younger players.
Members jeremy_green Posted January 28, 2011 Members Posted January 28, 2011 BTW - Ed, welcome man! Nice to have a new mind appear. There has been quite a few recent additions to this place and all of them positive ones. Looking forward to hearing more insights. Cheers!
Members ednakayama Posted January 28, 2011 Members Posted January 28, 2011 ^^^Thanks man! My life has calmed down a little bit recently, so I'm looking forward to spending more time hanging with you guys.
Members Santuzzo Posted January 28, 2011 Members Posted January 28, 2011 Very nice ! Thanks for posting.I like your tone a lot, sounds awesome ! I was at a Mike Stern clinic a few years ago where he did what you described in your blog (played a chord tone solo over Autumn Leaves), and it also blew me away.
Members scolfax Posted January 29, 2011 Members Posted January 29, 2011 That was great! Can't wait for more!
