Funk Backing Track Jam

I saw this post by GaJ...

One excellent reason might be to take part in backing track jams. Occasionally Mo organises one here, and there's nothing stopping you doing that as well ... If you're recording and sharing, your arse is on the line, you will want to improve

...and thought I'd stick a track up to see what you fellas can do with it.

It's a little funk groove in E and I recorded it when I was playing around with different wah pedals. Not an easy one to solo over as you have to pick your moments (and what to play) quite carefully.

Anyway, here's the track.

Any takers?

Mr Philips,

This thread seemed silent without Mo around... I didn't have a ton of time so I only had one shot at this. So let's hope it gets others participating.

Performance notes (read: excuses) the first half sucked so here is the second 'warmed up' half. Seems a bit odd without the first half as a buildup ... I start hammering right away. Be warned, it is completely lacking in taste, restraint ... or really much in the way of musicality... more of a shred fest really. It is what it is warts and all!

Enjoy!

That rocks Jeremy! :rawk:..I really like the motifs you used and the way you played with the groove..very cool note choices too....excellent all round! :thu:

I played random stuff over the first couple of minutes....dig the b9 at the end :o..that should encourage anyone to have a go..:o

Loved it Mo! Really nice angular lines at the top... you had FAR more developed motifs than my take for sure! Nice to hear we dont all have A.D.D.!

You are a fine player my brother!

Thanks Jeremy!...I think I ripped that opening line from a Carl Verheyen exercise that I kept playing wrong!..and the wrong version then became part of my vocabulary..funny how things get internalised..

Yay Jeremy for getting it started. I always think "maybe I'll see if I can kick this off", go play for ages in the shed and stumble around with nothing :S

Mo - that was awesome. "Random stuff" FFS....

Thanks Gaj :)...it's a cool track to play over. Don't know if this will help anybody with improvisation ideas in general, but listening back to what I played, I repeated a lot of stuff. So, play a phrase, if you like it, play it again..chances are, by the time you realise you like it and try and play it again, you'll play it slightly differently (as I did)..and that takes you somewhere else. The overall effect sounds like you're having a conversation and you know what you're doing..even if you don't

I did a version last night and I broke the solo up into two sections. Listening back I realized that a lot of little runs and licks in the second solo was the same as the first solo. It really bugged me because it wasn't "intentional" repetition for a musical reason (or repeating a phrase back-to-back like you said, not having it surface again 40 seconds later).

It is a fun track to solo over, but I found it a little bit hard to keep things interesting for 2 1/2 minutes. My approach was to break it into | intro | solo | solo | outtro. I think that will work, I just need to make the two solos more different. But it was late, I only had an hour to work on it and I was exhausted before I even started. Hopefully I'll be able to put something up soon that I'm proud of...

OK boys, I've been lying in the weeds a little and I see I came back just in time. I'll take a schwack at it this weekend and we'll see what's doing :)

Ok, I just did a quick take on this as well:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=945046&songID=10472954

This was my 3rd take, and the one with the least mistakes (but still plenty of 'em), but I thought, what the heck, that's the point of jamming, isn't it :)

Actually after listenign back to my own take, what bothers me more than the 'wrong notes' are the notes in the 'wrong space' i.e. bad timing.

I heard this happening as I was listening, and took note :)

I also heard you possibly "not playing till you heard something, then playing it" ... there were pauses that work will that might have been this...

You guys really do inspire me to stay in it and keep practicing. Right around the time I saw this link I was thinking an exercise like this would be good for me. Like you say, "put yerself out there" right?

Loved what I've heard so far. Here's mine. One take, but I did spend some time warming up. The tone is a real amp, not an amp model, no pedals. Just balls to the wall.

Enjoy (i hope)!

I loved your carefully constructed approach into it, with that motif , and the intro "chuggas" building anticipation before getting going. I also love how you make it all work without fast runs for ages. Gilmour like. Since I can't do the fast stuff (still! :S) I was trying to do this with my own efforts.

It's also good to hear that this is a third go, after some thinking, and to hear just one or two places where it's obviously a jam :) There were hardly any though... it was great!

 I suddenly remember where that motif comes from ... its Another Brick In The Wall!

Damn Jon!...awesome. The section starting from 2.08 where you build up the tension had me grinning like a madman!..superb!. You have Authority in everything you play and that's where I need to get to. Killer tone too. :thu:

p.s. Got your book...starting work on it next week. :)

That was cool - very different from where I'd go. It's neat to hear everyone's unique style.

Your tone/feel's really nice here. Given some of the other stuff I've heard from you (Santuzzo ranges from "face melting metal" to "cool jazz"...), you show a lot of taste, restraint, and a sense of style and direction. Nice!

What I like in this solo is a balance between trying to capture and execute intelligent ideas and total abandon! Love it!!!

Oooh! Mo's "Interval Man" on this one! I like how it starts, then gets looser as it gets deeper. Good sense of direction! "specially those finger-swipes up in the middle. Cool noise. I'm in school over again!

Crap! Nice job guys ... Now my starter seems awkwardly isolated without the beginning! Damn you guys now I may have to take another swipe. Jon - seriously!! Smokin. Same with you Santuzzo
