And write out some tab to some of those licks? Or know where to find tab for it?

Please don't tell me to figure it out by ear, I can't do that!

Just from a quick listen, these aren't too hard to figure out, but you might need a little help:

Tip 1: this is a blues in D. So most (if not all) of the licks are from the D blues scale. Hopefully you know how to find a few patterns for that ;) (From what I hear, most of it seems to be from the standard pattern up on 10th fret).

Tip 2: download the trial version of Transcribe:

http://www.seventhstring.com/

I say "trial version", but it's the full program, free for a month. If you're like me, you'll love it enough to pay to register after that.

Without using Transcribe, I managed to discover quite quickly that it's in D, and can get something close to the licks he's using. But then I have been playing blues for 45 years! (I know all the formulas.)

To get them note for note, I'd load it into Transcribe and slow it down. (There are other slowdown programs, some of them free, but Transcribe is the best, and does a whole lot more than just slow down.)

To get you on your way, the first bar of the intro is triplets on this D triad shape:

-10--

-10--

-11--

(12)- (not totally sure this note is in there, but could easily be)

-----

-----

- the 2nd bar is this (top notes of a G9):

-10--

-10--

-10--

----

-----

-----

- and the 3rd bar is this (I think):

-13-

-12-

-x--

-12-

---

---

Then you get these two chords in bar 4:

Bb9...A9

-13--12---

-13--12---

-13--12---

-12--11---

-13--12---

----------

(You can just play the top 3 or 4 strings of those if you want).

And here's the first D blues scale lick, after the first vocal phrase:

Mostly it's triplets, but he squeezes 4 notes into a couple of those beats. The bends are all around a half-step.

All standard blues stuff.

thanks Jon, that was a huge help. I really haven't put in the time like I should to be able to even tell what key it's in. At my ability level, I can tell you you if you hit a wrong note, but I can't always tell the right note! :-) I have a pretty deaf ear to most things like this, so I use tab to start me out.

Thanks, again! I've never seen this tabbed out anywhere else before, or even anyone doing a cover of it.

The reason everyone always says 'do it yourself' is not to be nasty, it is because it is truly the best advice. I sympathize with being not of a level to pull it yourself, but you will never get there if you don't begin the process. I did a blog entry to help people with this. Here is the link:

I am glad Jon helped you in this instance. But very much suggest you need to add this skill to your playing if you ever hope to be of a higher level. Tabs can be a crutch many never get over. Start the weaning process in earnest IMO.

Cheers!!

Well - to paraphrase Sherlock Holmes - you just have to eliminate all the wrong notes. The notes you are then left with must be the right ones.;)

Seriously, It's not easy to begin with (I was terrible at it when I started), but the more you do it the better you get. Get Transcribe, which makes the job a whole lot easier. (I used to use 2-speed tape decks...)

You're a good man JonR..I was going to go with "Tip 2" only.
:lol::o

So that's how this forum used to work? Some guy politely asks for a tab and you douchebags... etc etc :D
