All you guys out there that are fans of alice in chains or at least fimilar with them and have a good ear: What are the intervals in the harmonies that give them such a distinctive dark sound? there's no other band that has a similar sound so obviously they're using something different.

I love AIC!..I think they use a lot of 5ths...power chord vocals

yeah alot of times there's that allmost transparent thing going on so i'm thinking alot of 5th's, but other times there's seems to be almost a clashy type thing where it seems like the intervals are really close like 2nd's. I'm not sure though. i'm really curious about the pre chorus in I Stay away. that is just so dark and erie sounding.

Huge AIC fan here...their Unplugged album is a masterpiece and a great showcase of their vocal harmonies..(especially on Got Me Wrong) For me it's more the combination of Laynes' high raspy voice with Jerrys smoothe mellow voice that created their dark and eerie sound. I'm sure there's a theoretical explanation as to what they're doing but IMO it's hard to reproduce the darkness they captured. I saw them live a couple years back with the new singer and they did some older songs, while they sounded great they werent as dark and eerie sounding as they were when Layne sang them.

Yeah it's rare to have a band with two guys that can sing well combined with top notch song writing for the style and alot of miserable {censored} going on you have an amazing combination. i was watching a Interview with Jerry and he was talking about how layne comes up with all sorts of crazy harmonies off the top of his head that are wrong but always sound right was the way he described it. My interpretation was he used alot of unusual intervals. But yeah a big part of it was how well jerry and laynes voices meshed. Amazing band.

And the Unplugged show was perfect to me, probably my all time favorite live performance
