Members polishpaul Posted April 22, 2012 Members Posted April 22, 2012 We're all musicians and I suppose some of you, like me, waste time piddling around with the built-in Windows sound mixer panels. I'd had enough and started looking around. Not much on offer from a google search, but I found one from some folk interested in animal welfare, which is nice: http://vegantech.bravehost.com No more having Mr Gates's idea of a sound mixer clogging up the view - this alternative has very smooth volume knobs (click and hold anywhere on a knob and move the mouse backwards or forwards - lovely!), 'on' lamps and balance controls. The view can be switched from play to record with one click, on the switch to the left of the yellow logo....now that's a sanity preserver! Slimline too, although an odd colour. Never mind. Does the job! No mouse-wheel control option, but I don't care. You can grab it with the mouse anywhere on a free space and slide it out of view. Red button to close, runs from a shortcut if you like. And spring is here! Life's lookin' sweet! PS.... Oh my, it gets even better! A right-click on its taskbar icon and you have a choice of four more skins. And if you close it, it jumps back to where you last had it. Top of screen is nice. Since you can drag it by click/hold on any free space, you can have it so you see just the function names with the control knobs etc below....so the view is of a strip just over an inch (2.5cm) deep. Life-changing stuff - it has an "always on top" option!

Members polishpaul Posted April 27, 2012 Author Members Posted April 27, 2012 Its been okay for me....none of that messing about between record and play mixers or having to have two mixer windows open and filling up the taskbar and screen when setting up program audio. It doesn't have the "advanced" option for microphone -the 20db boost - so that means having to go into the Windows mixer to click it 'on' or 'off'. The 'always on top' feature is very convenient at times. Re "taskbar clogging".... I've just found out how to move the taskbar - I'd done it inadvertanly a few times but now I know more about the deeper mysteries lurking in XP. Just put the cursor in the taskbar on a clear space and hold the left mouse button down, then drag the taskbar to the top, or left or right side. Further, hover over the border and you can increase it's size in the same way. Right click on a free space on the taskbar and select 'properties', then choose "auto hide"....it then disappears when not needed. I've now got the taskbar on the left side of the screen, where little ever happens. To bring it up, a just swing the cursor right over to the left side. My oh my....whatever next?
Members polishpaul Posted April 27, 2012 Author Members Posted April 27, 2012 Got daws....still need to set the levels in XP. All to do with plugging the guitar into the mike socket, basically. I should invest in a fancy USB interface.
