Members iMpreno Posted November 4, 2009 Members Posted November 4, 2009 So, I got an used M-Audio BlackBox for a good price here locally, but I won't be able to use it until I get a mini-jack to full-jack adapter for my headphones, so I was looking for opinions here and there to see what I can and can't do with it. Surprisingly, there are only a few youtube video that can give some good examples of how it sounds, and even less informations to see what people think about it. Do you have any experience with it? Would you advise me to keep it or should I flip it for something else? (Of course, I'll be the judge of that, I just want to be prepared in case this thing reveals itself as an epic fail) Thank you in advance
Members mister natural Posted November 5, 2009 Members Posted November 5, 2009 I think mine sounds best running into neutral powered monitors(stereo) - not the guitar amp. The clean models are stone sexy - the overdriven tones take some serious tweaking to get right. I also really like how it synchs it's midi efx to my DAW host thru the usb. It's one of the features that make it so unique. Believe it or not; the drum patterns sound pretty decent also. This is a deep piece of hardware; take some time to learn it & you'll appreciate it's elegant design and solid usefullness

I started tweaking guitar rig and Ableton Live yesterday using the BlackBox as an audio card and I noticed some awkward latency values, like 59ms on input and 50 on output (without using any asio driver), is this a common issue? Thanks again
Members elantric Posted November 5, 2009 Members Posted November 5, 2009 Must Use the ASIO driver - its much much lower latency! http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.drivers&f=995

I was referring to the latency happening when using directsound sound sources. It puzzled me because 90ms using an external sound card sounded somewhat strange to me
Members Karma1 Posted November 5, 2009 Members Posted November 5, 2009 I used to have an Adrenalinn, then I heard about the Black Box, which has a lot of the same features with a more user-friendly interface. So I sold the Adrenalinn and got the Black Box for a good price on a blow out. To be honest, I haven't used it extensively yet. I've used the drum machine for some demo recording and it's been fine for that. But the main features that I'm looking forward to using in a new recording I've just started are the arpeggiator-like patterns that you can create just by plucking a note or strumming a chord. There is some really wild stuff that can be done with this. They can also be synched to the drum machine. I'll post samples of them in a separate thread when I'm done, although it could be a while.

Thanks again Actually, no - I don't use mine as an A/D. I run the audio out to my interface and only use the USB connection for midi timing of the efxLike I said, you're gonna love this box IF you're patient enough to learn how to use it

Members iMpreno Posted November 17, 2009 Author Members Posted November 17, 2009 Would you know how to bypass the amp sims and record a live amp either miced or from a line out? I think you could use the 00 patch ("Bypass") and connect the line out of the amp to the input of the unit.

Thanks very much. I also have an EDI box to use, which I believe will give me a true sound without the outside noise problem.
