Mainly interested in ease of use and modulation effects but recognize amp sims cannot be avoided. I think the Boss is about $100 cheaper. Anyone ever compare these side by side? Which would you recommend.

Would it not be better to get the Line6 M9 or M13 if you're not interested in the amp simulation? It got more modulation effects than the X3, and I think it is cheaper.

If you are after:

ease of use

modulation (and other) effects

THE devices to get are the M series from L6

I have the M13 and it is honestly the best thing since sliced bread when it comes to ease of use and it's quality effects.

I don't think there is another product on the market that can compete with it for the above features.

The X3 Live is also a great device (which I also have) but they do do different things. X3 is a modeling device with effects (its effects are not as good quality nor do they sound as good or are they as easy to use as the M13). The M13 is a multifx for use with a modeler or amp.

I'd go with boss unless you wanna do some recording or buy a power amp and run the x3+power amp as a whole amp then straight into speakers. Though I think you can run the Boss into a power amp too. Hmm..

Anyway, if you don't want speaker sims, also I hate Line 6 for ease of use. It's not that I just don't like the way they're formatted.

Go to the effects forum if you're still having trouble, they know {censored} loads. They will tell you "Pods rock man" and "Boss are {censored}ing {censored} for moddeling."

The Pod X3 is more comparable to the Boss GT-10. If you are mainly interested in modulation the ME-70 could be where I go. But also consider if you want a floor unit like the ME-70 or desktop unit like the POD...it makes a difference! Sure you can add controllers to the POD or move the ME-70 to the desktop but it will add a minor hassle one way or another to your setup.

Also, IF you are mainly interested in modulation you may consider individual pedals, or Boss Twin Pedals like the CE-20...granted a lower tech idea...but better quality sound, that to me, is a more creative environment. ie....if I am playing live I go to my GT-10, but to play in a recording environment, I nearly always use my pedalboard or a subset of my pedals.

Alot of people don't admit it on HC, (especially in the effects forum), but there are three parts of the effect equation: COST, CONVIENCE and SOUND QUALITY. You gotta look at all three.
