As a VG99 and GR33 user I was curious and went to the site to check it out and to be honest, I'm still not totally clear what this is. I know a picture is worth a thousand words, but it would have been nice to have a voice-over giving a bit more explanation about it. It seems it's for being able to record each string separately - correct? It also appeared to have other functions but I couldn't quite get a handle on it.

Individual string recording is one application.

Another is running each string through its own effects chain. Or if you have an audio interface with more than 6 inputs, you could run each string through its own VSTs.

You could also run recordings of individual strings back into the box for re-amping applications.

Can't you do most of what you said with an axon ax 100?

I think you can separate all six strings and even have 12 different splits on the fretboard.

And from what I can see on the website provided, you have to BUILD YOUR OWN BOX! They only give you the instructions on how to make it. You must buy the parts and assemble them yourself. For me, that is a deal-breaker, as I just don't like to solder.

No. Bill's breakout box has one analog output per string. No analog out per string here:

I think you can order his breakout box built (by him, not you) for 175 British pounds, including shipping:

You seem to be talking about regular guitar signal while I am referencing a synth sound. I think you CAN have six different synth sounds going through the ax 100 (one per string)

Correct. I have been interested in this type of breakout box since RMC introduced one. Unfortunately they are difficult to get a hold of, by various accounts, hence Bill's take on the concept. This is RMC's: http://www.rmcpickup.com/fanoutbox.html

It is not meant to be an alternative to an Axon or Roland guitar synth. It can be used with an Axon or Roland. It is not a synth in and of itself.

Clearly, it's most important feature is that it comes in five different colors.
