Anyone have some demos of the JD-990 w/the Vintage Synth Expansion?

Recommended Posts

DonSolaris maybe?:)

The 990's seem to be going for relative peanuts at the moment, Im interested in hearing what the Vintage Synth expansion has to offer.

Ah yes, those are excellent!! Anything uneffected, showing off the raw sound of the Vintage Synth waveforms? Could you make some? Puulleaase? Pretty please??

The card contains a lot of saw and pulse waves. There is no much point of hearing them raw, as they would sound almost the same. It is the filtering that brings out differences of these types of waves.

So do all those optional cards just have a bunch of different waveforms, with new soundbanks? Is the JD990 hard to edit? Never been really big on Rolands digitals. The pads are nice. What are the basses and leads like?

I can probably post some mp3s for you later today.

Like Don Solaris said, though, the JD-990 is very editable and you can get awesome vintage sounds even without the vintage card.

In its day, the JD-990 was referred to as "the programmer's dream", or "the programmer's heaven".

but the JD-990 has a "special" set of patches prepared for it, using the Vintage Board. These patches are different from the "regular" JV80 set.

Anyway, samples from the Vintage Board for 990 coming in a few minutes (uploading).

I had the same thought about a year and a half ago. I bought a used JD990 (w/ vintage card), but when it actually came to selling the JD800, I couldn't bring myself to do it. Maybe I'll eventually sell it (when I find a killer deal on a used Roland V-Synth), but for now I just couldn't break up a happy home.

Thanks so much Paul!! These demos are killer....The 990 definitely has a more 'polished' sound than the 800,I can hear it.

Yeah, I hear you Karma1. It really would be hard to let go of the JD-800. Im sure it makes a great controller for the 990, but so would MidiQuest

Im also keeping an eye on V-Synth prices...Ive seen a few go for

It is true that the 990 has a different patch list for the Vintage card. I use a JV-880 with the Vintage card that I will sometime replace with a 1080. The disadvantage of the 990 is that it is only 24 voice polyphonic. Alot of the patches use 4 OCSs so you are left with 6 note polyphony. However, with general 'Vintage Synth' applications, I find 6 note poly is usually suitable. I love the Vintage card and really dont think it would dissapoint. I love the thick Oberheim and Jupiter pads and the Mellotron stuff and the Solina, ARP String Ensemble, etc patches, the JX stuff is there too and done very well, also Yamaha CS flavoured stuff, Moog basses. It's all quite good IMO. It also has some great FX, ambient type patches. "Atmosphlange" is a favourite of mine! Get it, you'll love it. Consider the 1080 for 64 note poly and other great JV/XP patches.....

To me, the JD-990 is fat enough that I almost always use it as a 2-osc machine, so I get 12 voices.

Agreed - the quality of selection for the total 8MB of waves is really quite solid. A must in any case.

But realize you will lose the JD-990 filter and sound. ;)

cheers,

Why,oh why, couldnt Roland just put the 990 innards into the JD-800? That would have been one of the coolest synths ever. It still is, but I think every JD-800 owner GASes for a 990 to link up to it at one point or another.

you know the answer to that- cause the racks come out a little later and Roland is all about progress (and obselesence)

Ok, VC-3, the JD-1000 card.

No true Roland lover doesn't gas for the 800. As far as digital goes, I'd put that right up there with the V-Synth... and the reason the V-Synth is on top is it's ability to turn into a D-50... damn, if it wasn't for the M.EX in my D-50 and the Kurweil X-Mate on top, I'd be running my Linear synth off the V.

Remember, remember, the Synths of November!

i dont really think that SRjv 04 patches for jd990 is that much better nor spcial compare to the JV patches, to be honest

but then...

after trying out so many junk patches, finally .... today.... 3 hours....something made me ....decide to keep my jd990, check out yahoo jd990 group, download

User patches > From Gonzinigonz

dispite the small jd990 patch banks... that driving me a bit @#$#@#$..... however i like that jd990 Banks.zip enough to keep the jd990!:thu:
