We've been in touch now and again since.

Members ginnboonmiller
Doug Elliott custom builds mouthpieces as separate and interchangeable shanks, cups and rims -- you can change out any element at any time. They're pretty great, too:
Members ginnboonmiller
A sub-contrabass tuba pitched in BBB-flat:There were two of these built -- I forgot the maker right now -- one is at Harvard and gets played annually (that's Sam Pilafian, formerly of the Empire Brass in this photo), and the other one was at Carl Fischer Sheet Music in Union Square in NYC. Now that Carl Fischer is gone, I'm not sure where that tuba ended up.

Trumpet players have sort of written the guy off as a joke, especially after the {censored}e he put together for Wynton.

Monette is just like Way Huge, except that he's still building stuff: -The folks that trash talk his trumpets and mouthpieces invariably can't afford them. -Much of the mystique and out-of-reach pricing is absurd. -He makes wonderful trumpets and mouthpieces. -The most wonderful trumpet in the world doesn't make Wynton Marsalis a more creative musician with a less dead sound. By the way, his recent designs have backed off from the uber-heavy, ultimately dead-sounding stuff from the 80s and 90s. And he himself is still a kook. I've played a Monette mouthpiece. It was a really wonderful mouthpiece. I didn't think it was quite $350 wonderful, but it was wonderful. And as the guy who owned it said, if you aren't happy with your equipment, a high-end mouthpiece is still a hell of a lot cheaper than a budget tuba.
