bump for the night crew.....

i checked out the area 51 mod kit, $140 for drop-in $100

for diy. For that price, I would like the DC adapter.

There are "halo" inducters for around $30 shipped, and

60's style pots for $20. Also, most important, a true bypass (carling) for around $20 shipped. This is all starting to add up

to the Area 51 price range, and I am not a pro with the soldering

iron, either.

Anyone here done (or had done) the mods to get a "vintage 60's" sound?

Suggestions?

Hey Tuco,

Check out the "Pimp My Wah Pedal" thread on this messageboard. I give out very detailed information on the wah pedal mods you just mentioned. You'll find it very informative.

As far as mods. I never really found anything that floated my boat. It was THE wah sound I was looking for.

Tried a fasel in it...meh

not my thing

Sorry, not much help here
:(

Yeah, I have to admit that I bought it for looks, basically...:o

But, also it's a good platform for getting to the vintage sound--

so, I bought it to mod.

Thanks for the info, hamer. I need to decide if I can get a friend

of mine (biomed tech) to do the install. I think I will get the individual carling bypass, the "halo" inductor, and the "north

star" pot. Might try to find a dc input and led too....but maybe

a little TOO much $$$$$

Hey tuco,

I'm more than glad to share the information with everyone. I know some folks who do wah pedal mods may not like revealing trade secrets. Who cares? I've been trying to contact North Star Audio for the Castledine wah circuit board and their phone number is out of order. If you're going to do the DC input jack, you will need the following parts:

1K ohm 1/2 watt resistor (Carbon composition)

1N5239 Zener diode 9.1volts 1/2watt

470uF 16V capacitor

2.1mm (Boss PSA) DC power jack

Find it here: www.smallbearelectronics.com

I bought a Teese RMC3 wah and after spending a day tweaking it and listening for sweep and vocal quality etc...I found something I liked a lot... and then I plugged in my stock Vox pedal. I realized that although the Teese was a little bit nicer, it wasn't THAT much better. Just different and less extreme. Moral is that you might want to leave it alone other than modding it for true bypass. It's a nice sounding wah.

yeah, that's what I am expecting. I haven't owned any other wah

besides an old morley, a chrome monster with an outrageous

fuzz built in (not necessarily GOOD outrageous, either). I

tried to sound like Jimi (ha-ha) for a LONG time before I figured

out it wasn't going to happen with that thing I expect to like

the V847, and I am DEFINITELY going to go the carling bypass

mod---then go from there. The 60's vibe IS something I want,

eventually, though.

Hey Tuco,

The price list for the following parts:

Carling 316PP switch: $8.50

Dunlop Fasel reissue wah inductor (red): $20.00

Fulltone Icar tone pot: $25.00

BC109C transistors: .70 cents each

www.smallbearelectronics.com

These are probably the most expensive parts for the wah modifications, if cost is an issue. The resistors are quite cheap unless you upgrade to carbon film or metal film resistors for low noise, then the price is a little more.

Hey, GG....Thanks for hooking me up! I won the auction for the carling true-bypass switch, and now I am looking at ArielFx

stuff arielfx

I am told the "halo" inductor is the true vintage "jimi" style,

and that the "fasel" was after that. (?)

I am looking at their pots, too, esp. the "clyde".

Their auction prices are cheaper than their list price here, and shipping is cheap.

What do you think?

Hey Tuco,

The Arielfx website is great and they carry cool wah upgrade parts. You'll pay more for shipping since they're in Israel.

Buy the Area 51 wah inductor, Fulltone tone pot, and Carling 316PP true bypass switch from Area 51 Audio Designs or get the red Dunlop Fasel reissue wah inductor, Carling 316PP true bypass switch & Fulltone Icar tone pot from Small Bear Electronics. It's much cheaper to buy here within the U.S and you'll save money on shipping.

I have the Area 51 wah circuit board on my Crybaby wah casing and the Area 51 wah inductor in my modded Vox V847 wah pedal. Great products!!!
