best vox/fender clean amp for under $500??

If you're going to want something that can get as loud as a Mesa and switch between them, then I'd also suggest the Fender Hot Rods - you could probably even get a Deville for less than $500 on ebay.

A blues junior or other 15 watt amp would make a nice practice amp or small gig amp but they won't be able to keep up with a stack if you want to have an A/B amp setup later on down the road.

The Traynor WR20 is a pretty nice amp as well and if you can get a Reverend Goblin that could help ya get both Fender and Vox tones.

again no peavey classic lovers here :)

imho a classic 30 sounds better and is cheaper than a fender hot rod deville, and you can also use the dirt channel, but it is not as dirty than the mesa

i have also a laney lc-15 very nice thingy, but too small to play with a band without micing
