thanks, i did try the google where i got nothing but loads of ads

also a siily question, why does it sound awful when running distortion pedal directly in to soundcard line-in?
is it due to the high impedence signal from the pedal? if yes, can this xdi from tech21 solve the problem, i mean it has a low-z output?

Plugging a distortion pedal straight into a soundcard (or any other full-range unit, like a stereo system or whatever) will always sound like ass, regardless of the signal level. Basically, you're missing the impact the guitar amp and speakers have on the sound, which is quite a lot (as you noticed). Get a decent speaker simulator unit to run in between the pedal and sound card, or some type of guitar amp simulator plug-in for your recording software, and you should be much better off.
