The bassist in my band is looking for a transparent overdriven sound.

He uses a fender american Jazz bass into a bunch of strangely matched pedals into an Ampeg SVT (a solid state SVT, strange no?).

the pedals he uses are:

Boss TU-2

Boss Bass Distortion

EHX Bass Balls

Aphex Bass Exciter

Dunlop Bass Wah

Boss SuperChorus

DOD octave pedal

Rocktron ShortTimer delay

Tech 21 SansAmp

Any suggestions?

The pedals that come closest to the sound of a cranked tube amp for bass are the Hughes & Kettner Tubeman (older black 1-footswitch version) and modified Boss BD-2 Blues Driver. Both are fantastic for a fairly transparent bass overdrive.

The Sansamp Bass Driver would be amazing, but it sucks way too much midrange out of the sound.

The Fulltone Bassdrive is an extremely underrated pedal. It actually sounds better on guitar than the Fulldrive, IMO. Anyway, on bass it sounds very transparent, and definetly kicks major ass in the overdrive department. Its not really a fuzz or distortion pedal, but a smooth overdrive.
