Members JimVW Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 I was just on the Internet for around an hour, then I turned my computer off and noticed that the DSL modem was not connected to power. It was a Twilight Zone moment. I guess my neighbor has a wide open wireless network, and my computer found it when it couldn't find the DSL signal. Wierd. I suppose I should tell them and offer to reconfigure their router.

Members tommyn Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 In densely populated college student neighboorhoods, it's quite normal to be able to pick up lots of your neighboors wireless signals. It's quite easy to have "free" internet this way. Not that I would know.

It is the neighborly thing to do. Though I dream of a wireless grid throughout Ballard.
Members Klisk Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 Kind've sucks for me, because I live in an area where people can't even afford DIALUP, let alone broadband.... Yet I have tons and tons of neighbors crammed right next to me.So unfortunately if my connection goes down, I'm out of luck. I could only wish I had neighbors rich enough to leech off of. One of my neighbors are a family of almost 13 people, most of which are kids, and they don't even have a computer. It's mind boggling. Ah, the ghetto.
Members Merkin Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 I've just come back from 4 days in Auckland, the biggest city in New Zealand. I was staying at a hotel in the CBD and could not find ONE wireless connection to "borrow".Hi hicksville
Members hookstrapped Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 I just clicked on my AirPort dealie and it lists 4 other wireless networks; all are password protected but for one set up by the apartment management -- but that one's signal goes in and out, it's really just meant for the main building across the alley from me.
Members bucket_brigadier Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 I'm on my neighbor's wireless too. Just because I'm too lazy to switch back over to mine. There are 6 hotspots in my range.
