i wonder if you can have the "tone" circuit bypassed on an OD pedal...the only od ive owned that didnt change the sound hardly any was a stock maxon od808 and the dod yjm i just bought doesnt change it hardly at all either, course the yjm doesnt have a tone control on it anyway ..but ya;ll know what i mean...

You want an overdrive that's "transparent."

 

Do a quick search for "transparent overdrive" and you'll come up with a ton of examples of boutique pedals that don't alter the overall tone.

 

Tube Screamers are particularly notorious for increasing the mid-range frequencies, although there are modifications that Keeley and Analogman can do to reduce this so-called "mid-hump."

 

There are also a lot of pedals out there that specialize in preserving your guitar and amp tone without coloring it much at all. Check out the Zoom PD-01, for one inexpensive example. They're discontinued, but you can find them on eBay.

i had a bunch of od's pedals this summer but i was using them on a vox valvetronix 60w 1x12..ended up putting them all on ebay..wish i had tried them on my current amp to see what they sounded like with a tube setup:cry:

 

t miranda eruption (think handbuilt version of a modded DS1)

boss ds1 ..keely & analogman

bad monkey

maxon oc808

maxon od 880 the new tube one

boss sd1 analogman

 

the maxon sounded the best on the vox and it was pretty transparent i thought
