Storage question for those of us with too many pedals...

Okay, well it's time ot admit I have a problem. While I don't think I'm one of the worst offenders on this forum, I'd guess I have more pedals than the average guitarist.

So I've come to ask what does everyone else do to organize their pedal collection?

I recently got a couple of old cabinets with shallow drawers (4" - 6") that I think will work. Now I need to figure out if I organize by type of effect, or brand. It makes sense to have all the overdrives in one place, but the PME effects seem to belong together (even though they are all quite different). And then the Danelectros... They'd all look good together in one drawer, but it might make more sense to seperate by category...

What do you all do?

EDIT: Please ignore the gramatical error in the subject. I need to proof read more (or not post when I'm too tired)

Okay, so I came up with at least a temporary solution. Found some old drawers that people with throwing away that fit the pedals okay. Keeps them free of dust at least (they're down the basement with all my tools)

Here's the layout with everything closed up. The big cabinet is where I keep the guitars, the 4x10 on top is for my bass rig and the drawers on the right are for the pedals.

Here's the cabinet open (and my little assistant - she's usually there when I make some noise). I got the cabinet on the local freecycle board. Used to be a computer workstation for a daycare.

Cute kid too, i like the picture of the little one looking into the distortion drawer.

Thanks! As she gets older she becomes more helpful.

Here she is testing IndoFunkCity's Pan Pedal (described in this thread )

She loves pedals, especially tweaking the knobs. That's the only problem with the drawers; she can reach most of them.

I swear I have a wah drawer just like yours...

Empty crybaby, FX-17, and whatever that more squarish-looking black one is. I've got one of those. And an old Sam Ash volume pedal...we're talking OLD school Sam Ash here. Can't decide if it's worth anything or not...if not I'd like to use it for a project. If it is, I can sell it and buy some dead crybabies!

I've actually started using Tupperware type enclosures for the pedals I don't use everyday. You can go to the 99 cent store and find some for the different size pedals. Keeps out the dust and keep them from banging against one another. If you get the same size box then they stack well.

Do you mean one pedal per container? That's an interesting idea. That would make them stack easier (and just a little more toddler safe :D )

I have like 60 pedals on a shelf in my closet but when I move im planning on getting a really classy cabinet for everything. What is a problem for me is I buy alot of used pedals that dont come with boxes. I just realized my zvex poves fit a boss pedal perfectly so ill have to order a bunch of those for all my used pedals to live in.

Yes, 1 pedal per container. The Boss size pedals fit perfectly in a 4x4x6 box. I even buy some dish towels from the 99 cent store and wrap them and put them in the box. Make a label on the P-Touch and stack away. Keeps them safe & dust free.

I was going to list the contents of each, but I guess most of us can name them anyway ;)

Do you have a pic of that old Sam Ash one? I think I've seen them on ebay ocasionally. (sorry I don't remember what they go for)

The crybabies are actually both complete and functional. The one is my first wah from high-school. Just a GCB-95 with an input buffer, but I haven't had the heart to mod or gut it yet (that's in the original cardboard box). The other is the transition wah that you helped with with the board for. It sounds good so I keep it.

The FX-17 and the square one (a Tronix as I recall) were recent acquisitions. I spent along time hating the FX-17, but recently came around to digging it (and I found this one in need of repair at the local GC). The Tronix was a recent ebay score ($5 BIN). It's very flimsy, but actually sounds good. Weird circuit. 1 transistor and no coil, as I recall.

I'm not sure why I keep the Danelectro, but I do. It's not bad, but I don't love it.

The Morely slimline and the Boss PW-10 didn't fit, so they ended up in the filter drawer. The Boss will go back on my bass board as it has a couple of good sounds.

The "project-wahs" aren't even pictured. I think I have 3 of those chrome Sam Ash pedals (all new and probably working, but I've never even tried one) plus a crybaby shell and a Rocktron shell. Project enclosures are still in a flip top tote as I ran out of drawer space. :D
