I'm considering putting some different pickups in my tele. Its an American Deluxe Ash and has the SCN's, which are nice, but I'm thinking I may want a true single coil. I was looking at the Custom Shop Texas Tele set, any opinions on those or is there something better? Thanks.

{censored}, b10... :(

but i'll post it anyways:

apparently, lindy fralin > your mom > * > you

or so I've heard. they're not cheap pickups, but if you go to www.fralinpickups.com you'll see a selection of all of his stuff. One of these days, i'll manage to afford a set of the strat pickups...steel poled 43 probably...p90ish strat sound!

Ok back to your original question, custom shop texas tele pickups for your tele.... I put them in mine and there is no looking back. They are great sounding pickups and not a bad price I paid 199 canadian . Also don't stop there check out a 4 way switch for the tele, has a great sound with these pickups in series....

I recommend checking out the Just Pickups forum at Telecaster.com. That should give you plenty of good ideas.
Here's the link...

I'm very pleased with the GVCG / Jason Lollar AlNiCo 3 staggered pole pickups I bought after checking out the above forum.
Here's the link for the pickups I bought...

You can grab the set of two for $89 from musiciansfriend right now, which is why i was wondering about the texas's. I already have the S-1 switching so the 4-way won't be neccessary.

what do you think about duncan broadcaster? the thing is - i have texas specials in my tele now, and the neck pickup is ok, but the bridge one is kind of harsh, and they're both a little bit stiff. i listened to the samples on the duncan site, and i liked the broadcaster the most, seemed like it was soft and airy. the vintage 54 on the other hand was stiff and shrill. here are the samples:

broadcaster clean
vintage 54 clean
broadcaster dirty
vintage 54 dirty

do these samples tell the truth? what are some other pickups that sound like the broadcaster?

I had a set of Kinnman's in a Deluxe Power Tele I got rid of. I loved the Kinnman's.

I just put a set of hand wound OC Duff's in the Hwy 1 Tele that I now have (true single coils,- Nancy neck and Alnico IV bridge). I asked for more clarity in the neck and I got what I asked for.

It really depends a lot on your taste what you end up liking. If you know what you want OCD can make it for a reasonable price.

I think I miss the Kinnman's although I was never quite satisfied with the neck pup. I really dug the bridge. I really miss the Deluxe Power Tele I had.

Anyway, I would be interested in hearing what the SCN's sound like compared to what I've had. Let me know when you change them out if you want to get rid of them.

Regards!

The SCN bridge is nice, however its a fairly modern sound. The neck pickup leaves a little to be desired as its kind of muffled sounding, it needs more clarity. I really do like the middle position with the S-1 engaged, but with OD it gets a little flabby in the bass. Its gonna take me a while before I can afford some of these pickup suggestions.
