Members gorelord
i'm generally looking for something that'll give me that super chainsawy fuzzuzz, ala leviathan, "filosofem" era burzum, or weakling. if none of that sounds familiar, think of a super distorted chainsaw jacking off on a ghost. Members voerking
try stacking fuzzes and distortions. also, those recordings (leviathan, xasthur, etc) usually have several layers of multitracked, fuzzed out guitars to get that ambient fuzz/drone effect. Members daelvo
get a guitar pod and tascam 4track mkII portastudio. find acceptable tones by driving the pod's various amp emulators and the portastudio preamps at high levels. this will accentuate the inevitable artifacting brought on by pod distortion as well as the ugliness provided by tascam's gain. following the preamp stage be sure to crank the channel eq gain on one if not all three bands of the 4track. manual automation from tascam output to cdburner accentuates the {censored}ed up sound. Members ManiacManos
Write direct to your DAW using ONLY a metal zone. Apply a 50 db gain add to track. Enjoy the clipping
Members kirs
Buy a bunch of tube equipment and boutique pedals and chain them up to ultimately sound like a $79 SS Crate.

Members voerking
wow. a bunch of people are oddly hostile about black metal. try a few fuzzes and distortions, together and seperately, to get the sound you want. i have a fuzz factory, but i'm sure you can find something cheaper that will give you nice buzzsaw sound. Members digital
leviathan is sure very productive... i'd go for the line 6 pod solution... you can experiment with ampmodelers and use computer software which i think leviathan is doing... it's only one man after all... Members ishoulddie
An old Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal would work pretty well for that. Crank all the knobs, and there ya go. Works well for the old-school Swedish death metal sound, too. (since that's what most of them used)

Maybe you'll like this one better http://www.digitech.com/products/Grunge.htm Don't let the name fool you, this little pedal can produce somebuzzy chainsaw sounds - just crank the high and grunge knobs. I don't consider myself an expert in black metal (heard very fewknown bands and some local bands here), but I think there isa good chance you'll like it, and it's really cheap. What's your setup, amp-wise? The black metal band I share my rehersal space with uses a bunch of stuff for the various guitars, like the HM2, a Trimetal (both already mentioned), a turbo rat and the gain channel of a JCM 800 head. The unifying thing about their sound is, though, that everything runs into a loud tube amp.

Members benjamin g
i {censored}ing LOVE Weakling. If you take a cigarette pack amp and plug it into a cab it sounds pretty {censored}ing black metal haha. Or just ridiculous, i thought it was funny at least.
