I'm not sure if this is worth the money and hassel. I'm trying to get the best sound i can for not much money...since i don't have much. here it is. Epiphone les paul standard-podxtlive-epi valve juniour(Thinking about buying and having an amp tech put in an effects loop so i can by-pass the pre-amp and plug the pod into it's power amp)-cab of a vaxad30vt(have a tech insert something so i can power the cab with a head). Should i do it or am i just trying to hard to make something from not much.

'best sound for not much money' leaves a lot of room for opinion/interpretation/intent --- what are you planning to do with this rig? gig, or home practice, or play with others, or what? and what sorta sounds you looking for?

Modellers sound better plugged into PA or keyboard type full-range amps. That way you can take advantage of the amp and speaker sims.

Personally though, I'd get a decent amp that you like and add pedals as you get the money or feel the need.

i play on my churches youth parise and worship band so will be playing live. I have a podxt live and don't have the money tto buy alot of pedal. I have heard that the pod sounds best going through a tube power amp so i was going to get the $99 epi and by-pass the pre-amp and use the pod as the pre-amp going straight into the epi's power amp

You heard incorrectly, at least based on my experience. The POD already models a tube amp and its speaker. Applying the model to the real thing doubles the effect so to speak and actually deteriorates the sound.

I'll agree to this. Believe it or not my podxtlive sounds better in my Vox Pathfinder (SS 15W). Through my Traynor it sounds muffled even with the amp/cab sims off.

Well, this is partially correct, not 100% incorrect. You can set it up to go into the input of a combo amp, the input of a power amp or effects loop return, direct to the PA, plus some others. All this does is change the internal EQ to compensate for what line 6 figures will change depending on what the unit is plugged into.

From there you need to change speaker cabinet emulation depending on the setup, as well as and EQ'ing. The advantage of having an amp vs. going to the PA is that you are not reliant upon the sound guy to give you enough volume in the monitors to hear what you are playing.

As for a power amp/speaker setup. You will likely want something with decent headrom of at least 25 watts tube or 100 watts clean. You will never use all that power in church, but it will allow for the POD tones to come through without amp distortion.

Personally, I'd get a small combo like a Traynor (regardless of the previous poster...try it out), with an FX loop already built in, and try the POD both in guitar input and the FX loop return. Create some patches with the proper cab simulations either on or off, and see what you like best.

I run my pod sometimes through my FX return on my combo (50W EL34 tubes), and with proper settings I get incredible tones. Turn off the noisegate...it is a tone sucker for sure. Most presets have it on.

Otherwise, spend some time with the soundguy at your church to try and dial in a good direct sound with the proper levels and evough foldback in the monitors to hear.

Yes, try it in an amp with an effects loop, by all means it may work for you. I'd do that before getting someone to put a loop in my amp.

For me, I can get "decent" tones from the podxtlive but imo it really takes away a lot from the amp itself. Also, some patches work good in front, while others in the back. Trying to reconcile the difference makes it sub-par. The other big drawback for me was the inability for me to tweak all the effects on the fly. Also, you can't string fx along any way you feel is best.

thanks for the replies and opinions. I'll try to work harder to make it sound good through the PA system. I think i am trying to find an excuse to buy the epi because of the good price. Also i'm not real found of the podxt's tone. I love the versitility but it lacks in power and....well tone. I mainly got it(instead of saving alittle more and buying a $500 or $600 tube amp becasue i'm going to college this fall and i want to be able to play in my dorm. So i'm trying to make the Pod work now while i'm playing at church. I'm also hoping that it sounds good recording. I have recorded alittle before but i want to start a a bigger project.
