live software looper recommendations

So I've been hooked on Jesu and many other bands out there taking full use of layering in their recordings...

I want to do it live. I'm soon planning a MacBookPro purchase, and after I get the whole interface/latency thing worked out, do any of you folks know of any software to help me out? I'm looking for full functionality, being able to do real-time sampling to the computer, then have it continue the loop, then be able to add layers to it and whatnot, differing lengths and whatnot as well, the better the software is designed to cater to my needs the better, as I'll need all the help I can get.

I've been looking at digital performer, but I'm not sure it'll do what I want, it's my understanding it handles prerecorded loops, so I'm thinking maybe Ableton live is more up my alley?

what say you, effect (and hopefully looping) community?

why not a a loop station
or something designed for it

i bet youd be a lot more pissed if your brand new computer that doubles as a guitar pedal got stolen, than if your guitar pedal got stolen

49 minutes enough?

Good luck. Go to loopers delight internet forum, first off. I have to this point been unsatisfied with software live looping and have a bandmate who has been trying to develop a software looping rig that works the way he wants for YEARS and keeps encountering 1 problem after another. If you don't want to get deep into programming and want something reliable enough to use live I would still go hardware at this point in time.

The only person I know of who has a rock solid software based live looping setup is Jamie Lidell, who rocks the {censored}ing house, and according to what he told me uses something it took him years to program in MAX/msp. He suggested I try the same in reaktor5 instead (it wasn't as good at glitch-free sample manipulation until the latest rev).

i just started a loop on this subject up at craig anderton's forum actually. my thinking at the moment is that ableton live with augustus loop as a third party plugin installed would work best. Live will give you the sonic manipulation youre after although its a pain for on the fly looping. very difficult to get it right. augustus loop is well spoken of though.

p.s. whats wrong with boss?

I just found this on the ableton website, I'm pretty convinced that this is a great solution for what I'm looking to do, anybody else have any input on this?

yeah its cheezy, but it demonstrates basically everything I'd be wanting to do, that MIDI keymapping software is pretty sweet, I wouldnt have thought of that.

yeah you can take his approach and live will do it but its complicated. you have to have the program set up correctly before hand and its difficult to delete a loop if you make a mistake, he doesnt delete loops. its very powerful software but its not very intuitive. its very frustrating :(

well, my loops arent ever going to be insanely complex, im aiming for an ambient but very heavy at times performance...I'm just looking to fill deadspace because my band is a 2 piece, me and a drummer. being able to tweak the loops on the fly is a pretty awesome feature I'd be wanting to take advantage of, I'm thinking with a decent midi footcontroller and knob panel I should be set...

I'm just not sure If I'm gonna want to lug all my gear around as its gonna get pretty unwieldy, I'm sure.

you can run VST effects instead of pedals, much space saved.

which is something I'm SERIOUSLY considering.

I make a lot of my own pedals and whatnot so I should be able to put together a nice floor rig where I can keep all my nasty distortions and things that I know a VST wont be able to do well...

Reverbs and things, thats where my VSTs are going to be used heavily.

Does anybody have any cool little recommendations as far as firewire interfaces and MIDI controllers (both foot controllers and tabletop controllers)

in this video http://www.ableton.com/_common/downloads/pages2/artists/sound_tribe_sector_9/sound_tribe_sector_9.mov
I saw the use of a midi controller that seems to include a little X-Y controller, anybody know the maker of that?

i cant download the movie cos my computer refuses to play .mov files for some weird reason. im thinking simularly. dirt has to be analog obviously yeah but VST reverbs and delays can sound pretty nice and theyre way more versatile than any floor rig because you can chop and change the order so easily. totally customisable.

hi there, thought this might interest you. apparently lets you set up a laptop with vsts simply as an effects rig.
