Which Tube Screamer?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I play Hardcore, but am looking for not so much coloration of my sound with this pedal (some is fine, and felxibility to dial in different sounds is great). Which is why I'm looking at the Tubescreamer.

Another q: is the Tubescreamer going to be different depending if I run it directly into my audio interface for recording rather than having it drive my Tube Head? For some reason I think I read that it will. Is it only meant for use in overdriving a tube amp?

Thanks.

I couldn't imagine a TS sounding good when it not pushing a tube amp. I wouldn't have thought of a tubescreamer as transparant either. Different sounds? Probably want something with a better EQ.

Maybe look at something like a Zvex Super Hard On or Catalinbread Super Chile if you want a transparant boost.

Conpared to some of the crushing distortions out there, I consider the TubeScreamer Overdrive to be pretty clean.

And yeah, I figured the TubeScreamer would be {censored}ty if not pushing my Tube Head. I've been recording straight through my Novation X-Station Synth/Audio Interfc into my little Mac Mini, so that's the way it'll count.

What would you suggest as an alternative.

Bear in mind I'm loooking for a nice overdriven sound and not a ton of distortion (from this pedal, anyway)

Not the pedal I would recommend for Hardcore. It's really more of a rock/blues pedal. If you are happy with your tone but want it louder I'd look for a clean boost. I love Tubescreamers adding one to your rig is going to change your tone considerably. Maybe look into a Catalinbread SCP, Zvex SHO, Love Pedal Deluxe 60.

I think that's what I like about it.
I want some coloration of my tone, but not a crazy amount of coloration - there'll likely be another pedal for that.

I've been thinking about some dort of MXR
i.e. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Guitar/Effects?sku=151116

another terse gem from the 'hack. how do you do it?

every time I see a thread like this I scream

BARBER DIRECT DRIVE! or BARBER LTD!

these are great, high quality, true bypass, hand built pedals for the same prices as TS's-- and they're way more versatile.

The Jacques Tube Blower might do the trick. Ostensibly a TS808 with greater range (moving past drive into distortion) and enhanced EQ control.

I'd tell you more, but my amp went into the shop the day my TB arrived

And since my backup's one of these...

i've got the yellow dist+, when i tried them at the store i wasn't getting the double to sound any better. they both sounded pretty good with the little solid state amp at the store. however when i got it home and used awhile with my tube head got where i wasn't very happy with it. still like it better than a tubescreamer though.

+1 for this kind of pedal. the pedal i allways recomend is the Keeley Fuzzhead.

if you've got a really old tube amp with an allmost nonexistant preamp, then maybe a tubescreamer. but for me the tubescreamer is just a tired old horse, that's been beat to death. i think they cut as much tone as they boost.

look around at the so-called booteek builders, and see what they've got for proprietary pedals. check websites like PEDALGEEK or MUSICTOYZ, for some of the better brands.

+1

Great bang for your buck clean boost, that can double as a treble boost, bass boost, and overdri...well not really the last one. But a great clean boost for cheap.

I would say that if you are looking for something that doesn't color your guitar's tone to much and isn't being used to push an amp, then the Tubescreamer may not be a very good choice. It will give you plenty of mid-range for leads, but probably won't well with your recording interface. I would maybe suggest the Zvex SHO. If you are looking for something similar to the TS-9/808/7/5/10/VL Sparkle Drive/VS RT 66/landgraff/Maxon OD-9/808 then you might check out the Boss SD-1/MXR Dist+ which are pretty much like all of the other Tubescreamers, but seem to have just a little bit more gain.

Slightly OT: What's the Mac Mini/GarageBand got for overdrive and EQ? I want to pick one of those up in a few months.
