Click start>programs>accessories>entertainment>sound recorder. Click the edit tab in sound recorder and click audio properties. Under the Sound recording section click the volume button. Check the select box under Wave, close and click ok. Now you can record anything that plays through your computer.

Open up your wave recorder software that came with your sound card. Play with wmp and record with your wav recorder. If you don't have a wave recorder find one online or you can just use the sound recorder in accessories.

If using sound recorder click the file tab then properties. Click the convert now box for all formats. Under the name drop down box select CD quality, click ok and record.

Then you can burn the .wav file or convert it to an mp3.

use a program called CDex. It works perfectly, it's easy to use, and it's a nice small, tidy, program.
If I remember correctly, you can download it from download.com otherwise just type it in a search engine.
I use it for converting my recordings from my BOSS which save as .br (roland type file) I convert it with a different program from the BOSS website to .wma, from here I use CDex to convert my .wma to .mp3 to post on my website.

{censored} I forgot about that... another reason why I don't use sound recorder. You can do it but its a hassle. You have to record for 60 seconds, then when it stops you hit record again and it will add another 60 seconds, repeat. Once you have the length you need then you slide the slider back to the beginning and record the whole thing. Sucks.

Here try this. Its free to try. The trial version allows like 2000 uses before it runs out. www.goldwave.com

Install it. Open it. Click New, next to open. Select the settings you want. Then hit the record button on the right 'remote' control. And make sure the select box is checked under Wave whenever you want to record something playing through your computer in the future.

thats a very long way of making a longer sound recorder file. all you have to do is let it record for like 5 seconds, and then choose the "decrease speed" option under "effects" this doubles your time, just do that abou ten times and your file will be PLENTY long.

but instead of doing that, the already mentioned audacity works great, and so does winLAME.

Well, not all their stuff...they're not going in and changing every recording just to make a point or anything!
