Members vigor&kandor
the only way to truly know is to try as many as possible. i personally own 11 or so dirt pedals. i only use 3 on my guitar board, and i use one on my bass board. Members jrowan
I've been using the Tech21 double drive for about two months and I'm pretty happy with it, but I feel like the settings are only usable within a reasonably limited range. There are still a lot of good sounds in it though.
Members r2dhart
The DS-1 is a do-able solution but you have to get the amp up to a respectable volume level and you have to stay away from the stock DS-1 (to quote Kap'n "It sounds like ass"). An older MIJ model or one of the modified DS-1's from somebody like Analogman would serve you well. Also at bedroom levels it sounds very sterile. But, my personal favorite for for a Strat/Fender Amp setup is the ProCo Rat. Unfortunately it suffers from one of the same problems as the DS-1. The new ones "sound like ass". So you have to find one of the ones made ten or more years ago. The good new is you can find good tones with this one without turning it up to 11. Members stereotypy
THE RAT is really great for fender amps!!! my fender super 210 has a overdrive channel (tube amp) and that one sounds great. the rat is maybe 9.5 out of 10 in comparison to the overdrive sound i get from the fender.. so i really like that! Members vigor&kandor
i dont think the new rats sound like ass at all. i spent a week changing components in a rat trying to see what i liked. turned out i liked the stock chip better than the LM308 ( the stock chip was quieter, and less muddy). i ended up with a stock tone control and stock diodes as well. all i really changed was the quality of two capacitors(same value), and changed 2 resistors. you really just have to try a stock rat before you go for a modified one. if you go for modified then Keeley is the one who does best work for the rat. no i have never played a true vintage rat. i do have a vintage ri rat that sounds pretty sweet. i currently use a rat II wiht my fender Hot Rod Deluxe. To each his own. I just never could get the newer Rat II or Vintage Rat to sound like my 1987 model. I eventually sold them. You are correct though about the older Rats having a tendency to get muddy. That's wy I use them almost exclusively with Strat's or Tele's and bright sounding amps.
