I am breaking the "rules" of chorus

Since I bought my Boss CE-5 I put it after my Big Muff but I always liked it better with my amps built in distortion, which means the chorus is first because dont use loops. So I just tried it BEFORE my Big Muff and I like it a lot better. The effect sounds a bit cooler actually and I dont get a big increase in volume like you do when it is after. So I have decided I like chorus before distortion/fuzz. Am I the only one?

You are actually following the "rules" of chorus...

It's the same principle if you use your amps natural distortion, and either don't have, or don't use your FX loop. All of your effects go before distortion. I never used the loop on my previous amp, and my current one doesn't have one, and my pedals sound fine.

I'd say its about 50/50, it depends on whether you what your distortion to boost the effect, or if you prefer more subtlety

I had to move my mojo vibe before my icbm because I was getting way too much distorted chorus. That's a real nasty sound. Before that, I've always had modulation after dirt. I really hate the way a phaser sounds before dirt. You need it after so its more subtle, and you can't hear the woosh. Same thing with flanger, except it should be last in the chain. I think I need to get another flanger.

in my experience, putting a phaser after distortion makes it WAY more intense with a much more noticable swoosh. same with flangers.

I like having at least one delay before distortion/od as well. Helps with that kinda lo-fi sound for noisy swashy leads.

About a year ago I picked up a ce-5 and bf-2 and tried them out in front of both rat2 and my sd-1 and liked the results. To me it's just a bigger sound.

Conventional wisdom is modulation after ods/ds... I say that based on 3 things.

1) I've read about that before in articles

2) Most pedal makers websites that feature signal chains usually show dist->mod->delay.

3) Most multi-effects units (particularly older ones that had a fixed order) run it that way as well.

Phasers to me also sound better before.

And yeah.. I agree with the post distortion positioning makes things abit 80s sounding.

depends; for phase it is probably 70/30, for flange about even (if we include amp dirt), and for chorus about 30/70 the other way.

but there are no strict rules, just guidelines and experience.
