Members KjStrat62
When you all state put this after or before distortions describe what you mean. I know this question sucks but I am confused on this one
Members scott_335
Delay (or whatever effect) before distortion means that you have your guitar signal going to the delay pedal and then to whatever make you distortion. So guitar------delay------distortion------ clean amp. this would get you a different sound than if it was guitar------distortion------ delay------clean amp It gets trickier if you get your distortion from the amp. then you have to use effects loops to get effects after distortion. Does this make sense?

Members scott_335
Sounds logical, but who cares if it sounds logical... does it sound good?

Members fernmeister
i think people mean distortion in the sense of either pedal or amp... ...a LOT of people put phase before any dirt and quite a few run phase and other modulations between pedal dirt and amp dirt. comes down to how prominant you want the effect to sound. for example, delay before dirt is cool and a big part of many mabient soundscapes, but might not be what someone who is trying to "double" their sound might want. the conventions about pedal placement are really just a way to start out. the "rulebook" pedal layout is really just an easy shortcut to most of the stock guitar sounds. from there is it all about experimentation and making the sounds the music demands. But whatever works for you.
Members english_bob
What confuses me about these before/after distortion threads is why people can't just try it both ways and see how they like it?"I'm in an experimental band, and I want to know which way round to put my pedals"
Members Cosmic_Monkey
Putting the phaser before the distortion does tend to make it noisier. But then, it does seem to sound better like that sometimes, thats where I think a Univibe sounds the best.
