Big Muff for David Gilmour lead tone?

I went and tried a Big Muff reissue pedal in a store the other day. It was a super-thick tone, even on a strat bridge pickup..

Anyway, the main reason I tried it was to attempt to get that David Gilmour "Comfortably Numb" lead tone, as I've read that a Big Muff is what he often uses. The sound I got was thick and sustaining, but a bit too muddy for the sound I was going for..

Any suggestions on how to dial it in?

You need compression with that tone, as well as some eq pedals to dial it in. Don't forget the electric mistress and delay. You should really get the notes down good with your fingers, because its all in the fingers and the tone is the icing on the cake with that man. He really is one of the best guitarists around, he's got so much soul and emotion in his playing. Great solo.

+1 on the compressor and electric mistress. What the Mistress does for your tone (besides flanging) is smooths and compresses things further it seems. In a different way. If that makes sense. Running a compressor before the muff will juice your signal to the fuzz and the mistress after will take it and morph it around a bit. Giving a VERY convincing floyd tone. Not every flanger will do tho, the Mistress is pretty unique in that theres really no other flange out there that sounds like it.

tho i must say, for gilmour stuff that doesnt have any modulation on it, the Skreddy Top Fuel is a sure winner. I'd also try the 'flat mids' Mayo.

i played the comfortably numb solo on a fender fm212 at a nearby GC, that thing sounded great, very close to the actual solo sound (IMO)
