he's a badass.....

i've figured out some of his crap from seeing them 7 times, and watching his moves.

gear

his rig used to be

Guitar: PRS cu22 or schecter

FX: (not the proper order)

tu2

boss cs3 comp

4 DL4's

(3 for loops, 1 for delays)

Boss RV3

Boss GE7

digitech whammy ri

ibanez ts9

-a 1/2 rack compressor sits on his amp, on all the time

Amp: Fender Twin w/ mesa recto 2x12

davek1.jpg

davek2.jpg

on the current tour:

- he added a BOSS DD20 in the open space on the board pictured.

---this is used primarily for short, staccato delays, that have many repeats.

-he replaced the fender twin w/ a mesa LoneStar combo. sounded damn good-- and my guess, its more reliable than the fenders he was using (and breaking).

i saw them the first of april and also saw a twin. my friends in milwaukee and at coachella also saw twins. maybe it was a one time thing.

also... (i'm quite a MTB nerd..)

the samples in game needed me are:

first basic chord:

top three or four notes of a Dm 10th position chord

whammy thing:

what i do that passes well enough for doing covers is fretting an F#m9 (i think):

e

b

g 9

d 7

a 9

e

you hold the whammy down, then release it pretty quickly.... yep

as for drilling, haven't really worked on it, but i think that it's something like:

you play F#, E, and C# from a 9th position F#m7, then that high part is a sampled chord which is 11 on 3rd string, 10 on 2nd, and 12 on 1st. i think it's also a reversed loop.

chorus chords are F# D B A

(in drop d/5ths)

last chorus is F# D A B C#

and the verse part in pachuca that he plays is:

11 -- 9 -- 7 (bends) 7 -- 9 -- 11 (bends)

i also tap the chords then play the higher notes if that makes sense

so with my first left finger, play

G - 11th A - 9th B - 7th (bend)

B - 7th A - 9th G - 11th bend

i could also see him possibly using the whammy during that part but i don't know.

i'm still working on that cool loop at the end

if the old minus the bear forum was still up, i could show you the thread. there were quite a few threads where he described his setup, the fender reissue which he had modified so he could run the boogie cab, and the ce22,but dreamed of owning a cu24. jake even sold a few guitars on the forum...

i dunno dood......looks like a CU to me :D

iirc, ce's necks don't match the bodies...necks are satiny, unfinished.

i vaguely remember those threads on the mtb boards.

i wanted to get jakes extra twin :D

bummed me out when they took those down.

in botch he used a shecter double cut and then a les paul double cut into a mesa boogie dual rec. i think the clean parts on anthology were recorded with his twin. no idea on effects, but he didn't use much until after we are the romans i know.

Botch was great too, but there is really no point comparing them. To me they seem worlds apart.

well - they are worlds apart in terms of the music they play.

but botch left one of the biggest imprints in their genre with we are the romans, and influenced countless bands that are still playing today. MTB is uninspired imho, especially given their all-star lineup. and, i have a feeling that after they are done, their imprint will have been much smaller than botch's.

I kind of agree. I really loved Botch and you hear their influence in tons of bands (many of which I am not digging so much). They kinda tied together my love of Math rock with my love of hardcore.

I might just be getting old, but I kinda dig the mellow yacht-rock cheese of MTB quite a bit :thu:

yeah, he had a white lonestar. what's with the bottle of pills on his amp every gig? greg, do you know how to get the cool part/sound at the end of pachuca?

the end of pachuca is just the main riff....

---looped on the dl4

-----which is set for 1/2 time

-------which is then used for that double time/octave up sound.

especially given their all-star lineup.

unfortunately, not as star studded as it should be. nobody even remembers botch. scene hardcore kids have no idea all that stuff was basically invented a few years ago by botch and related bands. me and a few of my friends were the only people i knew who listened to botch even when they were around. botch is pretty much the band that made me wanna play guitar seriously. whereas alot of indie rock kids nowadays are riding minus the bear's jock.

minus the bear is cool though, i saw em a few years ago at bottom of the hill. very tight live, dave knudson is so ridiculous to watch.

and sharks keep moving weren't that great.
