NOBODY MENTION THE {censored}ING KEELEY!!!! WE GET IT

I had a 91' re-issue with the lm308 chip, and I found that this pedal wasn't good for anything

at first you think it might be as good DIST pedal...and yet it has this really odd compression/pick attack that ruins you "chunk", it's like an MXR+ with fuzz dynamics, it sounds like an interesting sound, but it's really stifling.

Okay, so let's use it as a fuzz..but now it doesn't compress enough..it can't get "wooly" without being muddy. Put it next to a muff and it gets shamed

useless tone control IMO, the "just breaking up sound" is really gated.

I can't understand the raves about it, and I'm pretty sure some famous guy used it for something.

And it was a really early dist...so maybe there's some nostalga form a time when it owned a huge market share and could very well have been the best thing at the time..

it's funny, I bought this peavey hotfoot pedal..and when you look inside it's a pretty obvious tweeked rat clone, right down to the lm308!

just a thougth, this thread is for haters only

I thought I liked it-played a vintage rat at a used store and liked it, but it was overpriced. Then I found one at a good price, and played it, and just didn't get the same feeling-played it next to a muff-liked it better than the muff, but not enough to buy it. Kind of like a fuzzy distortion, not really like a Marshall like they advertise.

I hated the rat. It just wasn't what I was expecting, that's for sure.

My impression of the rat was a tubescreamer with gobs more bass response and gain on hand.

Instead it was just sort of gated and funky. I can understand where it fits in modern rock music, but yeah. With my test drives, I had no desire to buy one.

I ended up with the Ibanez TS7, and I still use it till this day. :) I know the two pedals are entirely different beasts(breasts?), but I still associate the rat with my bizarre "I want a hotrodded tubescreamer!" phase. :freak:

Gave me a versatile pedal
but more importantly, what did it kill?

I had a rat for about five years. The only thing i found it useful for was playing leads, but after a while i went to a two tubescreamer set up while i was gigging, which worked better for the leads.

It is really hard to find a highish gain overdrive with natural bass response. tubescreamers do their thing... the rat almost does it... through my ranger it seemed to kill bass response... through amps with less headroom it seemed to have too much and get farty.

I actually got a lot of use out of it in the studio with my old band... we did two songs with distorted vocal tracks, and i used the rat on both of them.

I love my rat. The only thing i don't like about it though is that i only love the way it sounds when the filter knob is around 1:00- 2:00. Otherwise it's too trebley or too muddy. But when it is in that 1-2, it's just what i need for an almost heavy OD/distortion.

i love rats. i have 3 in all. one Vintage Reissue with LM308, one Vodka Mods, and one that i tweaked around myself.

the Vintage Reissue sounds sweet. i dont think it has as much gain as my other rat2s.

Vodka Mods rat is what i use for bass. i do not notice any bass loss when i use it.

my other rat2 is on my board. i tried tweaking it. changed chip, and diodes. tried different tone caps. i pretty much went back to stock after all was said and done. i tried an LM308 in it and it just mad it noisier. I liked the stock chip much better.

to each his own.
