There is one of these for a decent price at my GC:

I would replace the selector switch and have it wired up so I can get the traditional neck+bridge sound

Unfortunately I have never even seen a jazzmaster in person :( so I don't know if its really going to be what I am looking for, although I have wanted one for about....... my entire life.

the tele on the other hand, I know I could use and I like the sounds of it, and it can be had easier and cheaper....

definitely best to try one first.. it's not for everyone. a tele is more versatile, a bit lower maintenance, easier to find, and in most cases cheaper. try and find a JM or Jag to play before deciding.. could either change your life or end up on the not for me list, definitely worth exploring

yeah I agree. I like sonic youth, dinosaur jr, my bloody valentine, fountains of wayne, all of which use a jazzmaster....so I just always assumed I would like it.

EDIT

I also worked a guitar center for 6 months last year. asked everyone if they knew of anyone in town that had one.....no luck

you might like one then.. finding one at GC doesn't seem like an easy thing, i can't recall ever seeing one at mine. one thing to consider is if you do take a shot at one without playing first and don't like it you won't have any trouble unloading. like i said they aren't for everyone but i've found them to be the most comfortable guitar i've picked up, they're great to play. i'm a much better player on a JM than on my Ric. the sound is somewhat unique, i can hear one in a song quite easily. fantastic cleans, the lack of sustain works well if you're a rhythm player and when you add fuzz/distortion you get any sustain you could need and then some and the sound is fantastic.
