Boss SD1 - Why not?

Buy the SD-1 and then get the Monte Allums mod if you want. I don't have it myself but I've heard tons of good things about it, it's cheap, and the clips sound good.

Personally I use my SD-1 unmodded. I find it works out great because the mid bump and the slight bass cut work well for leads to cut through in a two guitar band, it's great. If I were the only guitar player I might get it modded to fix the bass loss though.

I've got an old MIJ Boss SD-1 that I've fallen in love with lately. I had it sitting around the house for about 15 years and suddenly realize this box sounds great! If someone can mod a new one into sounding like this one (how hard can it be?), you should have a pretty cool overdrive.

I have both an MIJ and the newer one too... The MIJ sounds better than the other but to me it seems like they have the same "problems", they're just less prominent in the MIJ. Personally I think they could both be improved by modding, but it's almost getting to the point where people think it's blashphemous to mod an MIJ :freak:

yeah, whatever.:D very early mij model, fuzzcentral mods done by delorean, who also installed an led bright enough to be seen from here to Yonkers.

to be honest though, if it was never modded, i'd still thoroughly dig it for the reason you posted (re: 2guitar band). that, and the fact that i scored it for $14

I tend to like my overdrive/distortion with a darker tone yet I haven't noticed any significant loss of bass with my MIJ SD-1, I have the tone knob set around 8.5 o'clock and it sounds great.

BTW, I have a mid 80's Ibanez TS-9 that I sent to Keeley for a the Mod Plus. He sent me back a brand new modded TS-9. When I shot off a nasty e-mail and called him on the phone he said it was just an unfortunate mix-up, but I kind of suspected that maybe he wanted to keep my "vintage" pedal un-moddified. I sent the new one back and he sent me back my old one with the mod. I thought it was almost un-usable before the mod, but now it's been my fave pedal for a couple of years.

I dunno how a TS9 could ever be considered unusable.........for anyone? I mean it may not be enough distortion for some, but its not exactly a love it or hate it sound like a ds-1

back on topic yeah me too, its so tempting to buy a DS-1 and have it modded, the clips of that monte guys modded one sounds SOOOOO good. and god thats so cheap for you to send it off and have them mod it for you. I wish i got a blue LED though :(:D i really like the blue one so much better than the red one hehe

i tried a stock one out this weekend, it hates my soapbars, the clean sound bled through when the effect was on. but when i plugged in my hagstrom it sounded ok. im just not big on that mid heavy over drive sound. i have been spoiled by home made boost pedals into raging non master volume el34 based amps. its hard to use anything else now.

its quite common for the sd-1 to bleed... there's a bleed fix online or u can always purchase the bleed fix from monte.. :thu:

i hadnt heard that, but i knew it was probably just a matter of upping the impedance of the input buffer. it was definitely a decent pedal with the lower output pickups, just not my bag.

that works a bit, but not 100%. This image shown above is a 'mute' circuit that will cure it 100%.

can this work for the .1microf cap or shld i get someting else?

Yes, it is a .1uf/mf.

Cap quality doesn't matter here - it is out of the signal path. I would go with a low voltage cap though - they are smaller and fit better in the pedal.

so i bought one today, brand new.

played with it for about 5 minutes when i got home and then got to work on the insides.

the difference is amazing.

i liked the sd1 stock, but with 91p of components it now sounds so much better.

i was going to do the bleedthru mod, but its going in a loop of a gcx and i didnt have a problem with it anyway.

for those who are interested, i did the following...

C2, C3 and C8 to 0.1uF

C6 removed

C10 to 10uF

R2 to 620k

R16 to 100ohm

R17 to 10k

D5 to an LED

D6 jumpered

i tried changing R6 to 2k2, but i found it had a bit too much gain in the lower travel of the know and added a scratyness to the top end.

all the changes are taken from varies bits a pieces i've found on the net.

any other changes i should consider?

thanks

dmk
