what is your price limit for a single pedal

For the longest time, I refused to pay much more than 75.00 to 125.00 for any new pedal. I remember sometime around October of 2002 Musicians Friend had a special on Carl Martin Delaylas for 200.00 and I figured what the hell.

Now 250-400 seems reasonable.. what gives!!??

what is your limit, what was it, and what broke it?

Depends on what it is ... I mean for just a stomp box that's a one trick pony it still depends on whether it's boutique, vintage or new and how rare it is or how good it is - there are any numbers of factors that go into it for me. Essentially I want a bargain when I buy so I'm not into paying top dollar for anything and I generally hunt until I get a good deal.

What's the most I have paid for a one trick pony pedal? Ohhh maybe $250 - $300 AUD ... that's about as much as I'm willing to pay for a one trick box. Now, if all the same things apply above but the pedal is capable or more than one sound or trick - then my price threshold goes up again depending on the pedal but generally I've not paid more than about $450 AUD for any pedal on my board. Most of the pricey stuff I have traded into and got bargains or I've managed to find them on the Bay for less.

I like wheeling and dealing better than paying straight up cash and that's usually how I work.

I paid $450 for a Boss SP-1 Spectrum. It is S/N 6400 which dates it back to the first production run ever for that pedal. It is also in excellent condition. A lot of money, but opportunities to buy a vintage pedal like that do not come along very often.

+1

If it is something that I am looking for and it is rare and clean then you never know

It was $200 for a long time. Then it started creeping up with stuff like the Moon Phaser for $235. Then the Eternity at $300. That almost made me sick. Then I bought a Nova Wah for $365, (which I sold a week later for $485). The most expensive pedal on my board now is my Pentavocal.:)

I feel the same way.

I'm actually cringing looking at the floor and seeing the pedals I paid for new. I guess most aren't that bad but the POG, Red Witch Deluxe and the Jamman were up there... I got a Modmax phaser for just over $200, that was awesome. Obviously the Z. Vex stuff is up there, but the only one I bought new was the sparkle Fuzz Factory.

the most expensive pedal I've bought is my dd20 that was only like 160 after tax.

I only buy things that I think are good deals. my pedalboard is currently:

Boss Ph1r $25
Visual Sounds Jekyll and Hyde $50
EHX Pulsar $30
Boss DD20 $160
Line 6 DL4 w/ expression $120
Boss TU2 $70

The rest of the pedals I own around all around $100 or less

This could easily turn into another kind of thread but I will say that I have scored major pedals from just being in the right place at the right time ... example.

Boss VB-2 - scored in 1995 for $60 Aussie
Boss DM-3 - Given by a friend.
A/DA Flanger - $75 US off Ebay broken - was easily fixed by Mike Ibrahim for nix.

And many more ...

overdrive/distortion/fuzz... i would have a hard time spending more than $200... for some i wouldnt even want to spend that much.. just really depends on how useful it is. There are lots of good options for well under $200, so its kind of hard to justify spending more than that, unelss its something vintage that will hold its value.

modulation- I have been dissapointed by all the flangers i have ever owned, and the most expensive one was $200... i guess i just need to spend more... maybe a TZF some day.

Delay... i am lucky because i actually prefer digital delay over analog. I am not really in to looping. I have a DD3 that i have had for years, and a maxon AD9... i actually prefer the cheaper dd3. To be honest im considering a DD20.

I need to get back in a band again, and make some use out of all this stuff.

Well for my own sanity I don't consider my Fulltone TTE as a pedal. I have seen them on pedal boards, mine is placed on top of an amp. Pedal wise I guess the BJF Sea Blue EQ is the most expensive pedal so far. I have a couple of others that are flirting with it pricewise. No regrets as of yet. :)
