Members disco_fluid
So this has probably been asked a thousand times, but I was listening to the new reissues of Tres Hombres and Fandango this weekend and on the new live tracks that accompany the standard albums track, Billy has the sickest fuzz tone I've ever heard. You think that is just a Fuzz Face? It's sounds kind of like "low battery" rasp and it's not so saturated you can't hear the notes (like his tone is now). What kind of fuzz pedal on the market today can break up in a similar fashion?
Members dan_nazarian
You mean on the guitar solo for Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers for example? I almost crap my pants every time I hear that.
Members disco_fluid
i'm thinking the live versions of waitin for the bus, jesus left chicago, and heard it on the x on the new reissues.but pretty much all the tones on those records are sweet. that specific warm and fuzzy sound, but with a clear pick sound he gets is what i'm after. but i'm sure this is the equivalent of asking how to get the "brown sound." Members dan_nazarian
Man, I should buy those reissues. What's the Brown Sound? I put a Pearly Gate pickup in my SG. It rocks.
Members Vince
I'd say it's not a fuzz, but The Les Paul, into a cranked Tweed Deluxe.

Members madhatter
His tone on those live tracks is pretty distinct. I'd love to know the answer as well. I do love his current fuzzed out tone though, its just so fat.
Members Vince
Oh, Live!! I think back then it was marshall stacks all the way, but as before, I could be wrong
Members Kelly
Pearly Gates and his '55 Strat into Jeff Beck's old Marshall heads, cranked to "patent pending".

I can get those exact tones like this!! Also, a CMATMODS Tube Slammer gets me farther into gibbons territory than any other pedal I have played. Members MidRanger
Tweeds are definitely a possibility..Marshalls don't get Beer Drinkers 'n Hell Raiser tone, without some fuzzy help from a box on the floor..Haha
Members MidRanger
Marshalls won't give you the Beer Drinkers 'n Hell Raiser solo tone, by themselves..(some of the record, yes) I've owned 5 of them from that era..A fuzz in front of a Marshall will..And a tweed deluxe probably will get it.. Members MidRanger
"Just Got Paid" is verified and documented that he used (brown face deluxe) different album, but that amp and tweed deluxes are a favorite of his, in the studio.."Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers" is a tone that is super filthy..Could be a tweed maxed out, or Fuzz in front of any good tube amp..
