Members Toolkid
Right now I'm using a Big Muff and a TS9 for disortion. I'm very happy with the sounds I get from my TS9 for when I want just a small amount of overdrive. However, when I want to play something a little heavier like Tool, The Muff just doesn't cut it. I'm really not happy with the Big Muff at all. I've come to the conclusion I should sell my Big Muff, and buy a new pedal. Preferably not digital. What pedal would you recommend that would be good for getting a heavier sound along the lines of how Adam Jones from Tool sounds?
Members shawnc
Proco Rat Deucetone or Proco Rat both with an EQ will give you pretty much any distortion type tone.

Dude i have a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and i was on a similar quest, I bought the Tonebone Hot British, it's an epic sounding pedal and will get you pretty close, for really heavy sounds i stick on the boost kick aswell as sort of an EQ to heavy up the sound a bit. Also bear in mind that Adam Jones has arguably the best heavy rythym tone on the planet, album and live, and to get it you need a Les Paul Custom, a Diezel VH4, a Boogie Triple Rec and a Marshall Bass head.... my point is , it'll never be as good as his, but you can get close. Also don't be fooled into thinking he uses absolutely loads of gain, really listen to his sound, it's not all that gainy, very powerful and choppy, live it's even more held back and sounds awesome. Members Toolkid
I have a Metal Zone from a long time ago and out of curiousity I tried it today instead of the Muff. Boy did it sound like ass. Way to digital sounding for my liking.
Members orourke
Keeley SEM Boss DS-1 I keep trying to kick that pedal off my board for something that is more hi-fi sounding. But it keeps sneaking back. The thing with the Keeley DS-1 is that it sound kind of crappy and muddy at bedroom volume, but played loud with a band, it just sings. It give thick smooth sustain but it's still much more transparent than a the Metal pedals or fuzzes.
Members Toolkid
Alright, I've been researching pedals all night, and I've come to the conclusion where I'm just going to lay it all out right now. I have a Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue amp with a Ibanez RG 320 FM and I run the distortion through the clean channel. I can't really judge the sound clips on the sites, or the sound I get trying it out because guitar center doesn't have my amp. What would be a good distortion pedal for getting a Tool like tone in my circumstance.
Members orourke
I don't know which pedal is gonna get you that tool sound... But I'll tell you one thing, you ought to eventually aim towards getting yourself a closed back 1, 2 or 4 x12 speaker cab. If you are looking for that heavy low end, closed back cabs are much tighter sounding. An open back combo amp will always seem a little flabby sounding in that department, no matter what pedal you use. If you have a chance to hook up you Fender amp to a 4x12 Marshall or Mesa cab you'll know what I'm talking about.

Members sporka
The Deucetone can definately give you variety. With two channels and many different combinations, you can hit such a huge variety of tone. Members Picassochild
DNA Analogic Gain Fxxker II...very versatile, very bass heavy if you want it, loads of gain...and much better that RAT. I got mine for $70, it's bargain.

I'm broke and will be all summer. Im paying off my loop station and ipod still. Anyways, what is a good cab that doesn't cost a lot? Would it be fine if I juse hooked my Blues Deluxe up to it? Members orourke
I think a Fender Blues Deluxe plugged into a closed back cab will sound great. I don't know much about good deals on cabs, all my cabs are either Marshall or Mesa, and none of them were patricularly good deals. One interesting idea is to have a Mesa 1x12 Theile cab and you Fender speaker running in series. I'm not sure if that's a 8 or 16 ohm load, but either should be o.k., but I could be mistaken (You might want to ask the Amp forum if you decide to try that). You would really be throwing some sound with a rig like that though. I have one of those 1x12 Mesa Theile's, it's pretty dark sounding so I usually eq it a little brighter from my amp. It wasn't cheap, but I saw a used on NYC Craigslist last week for $250. Maybe look into Avatar cabs, make sure you have a speaker that can take some low end like a Celestian Vintage 30. BTW, I'm really not a metal guy, my sound is more in the Stoner/Classic rock vain. I use either a Mesa Mark IV, Mark II or Reverend Hellhound head. I use two heads and go stereo. I don't use the channel switching, I like stomp distortions better But I do use a Baritone guitar sometimes, and I know what Tool sound like, so I have an idea of the sound your going for.
