OT: How often does your band practice?

Just a question of curiosity, really. I'm having a hard time convincing some of the band that we need to practice 2-3 times a week if we want to be really really really good. Am I unreasonable? I think once a week is just enough to get by. Fill me in on your situations. Thanks.

Once every fortnight. We're in a cover band so we learn all our parts from CD and put it together over a few rehersals. We could rehearse more, but time commitments prevent some of the others from doing so.

1 -2 times a week. The expectation is that you practice (learn your parts) on your own time, rehearse (get tight, work on arrangements) together. This works well for us because we read well, so new material (even if it came out of jams) is written out. Also, none of us has time for more-- I have a family, my bass player has an extremely demanding wife, etc.

If it were up to me....heck if it were up to any of my band....then we'd do exactly what you suggest.... 2 - 3 times a week. But unfortunately since we're all spread around the UK for most of the time we only rehearse when we know we have a gig coming up once...maybe twice before it to tighten ourselves up. We do solidly practice all our parts for every track on our own as often as possible so nobody gets out of practice.

Oh and by the way check us out :)www.myspace.com/krishuk

Once a week, might kick it up to twice for the next two weeks because we have our first show on July 1st.

My drummer also plays in another band that's bitching at him because he won't practice three times a week. Drummer made a point that playing an 8-9 song setlist over and over isn't worth anyone's time. It just gets mundane; there should be some adventure when playing songs...

When we practice, we jam about a third of the time, write a third of the time, and spend the rest running through our set. Three hours later we're spent...

I can conjure up ideas by myself, play with effects and guitar sounds by myself, arrange stuff by myself. If everyone does their homework, why do you need three practices a week?

I guess I want to do more than play songs for people. I want to create an experience. Call me naive. I think it would be pretty hard to make it in the music business without putting that kind of hard work in.

I like what comes from rehearsing allot ... I'm with Joe Strummer on this in that allot of great idea's as a band come from long sessions rehearsing ... I'm like that and a long session rat - I'll go for 4-5 hours and more if people around me are willing.

If I can get people to rehearse 2-3 times a week I think that's ideal but I understand distance and money + time are constraints for some people too.

I don't have the time for 2-3 a week...with family, and I still don't think that makes me a hack.

I've been with my bandmates so long that we have an intuition about us where we've learned to lock into each other's vibe. We used to practice more when we all didn't have kids.

2-3 sounds like too much, anyway. I tend to like my thoughts to brew and linger between rehearsals...can't do that if you're practicing 2-3 times.

Hmmm... well, when you are young, have a day job, can stay up late, and music is what you are trying to do...

We practice 3-5x a week, just depends on whether we have shows, are writing, or are preparing for the studio. The latter of which is what we are doing now. I hate what we sound like when we aren't continually rehearsing... I'm to anal to let flubbed notes go. And the only time I really play guitar other than my acoustic at home is at band practice.

Depends on the people. Depnds on what you're playing.

Some people are good enough and know how to LISTEN and flow well enough that once a week is fine. In fact I've seen people who aren't nearly as good when they practice too much.

But I've played with other people that it took 2-3 times a week to get really tight.

If you're playing basic rock, country or blues and you're halfway decent you shouldn't need more then once a week.

If you're constantly "jamming" and coming up with tunes that way, more is probably better.

But remember 1 gig is worth 10 practices. I've seen way too many bands get stuck in the basement because "they're not quite ready". You'll never make it in the music biz if you get stuck in the rehearsal studio either. Get you there and gig.

It depends. There's no right way.

In the beginning twice a week will do. Then
once a week will do just fine. It all depends on the
quality and level of the bandmembers, I mean if you
can't defend yourself on your instrument, no amount
of bandpractice is gonna fix that. There are no shortcuts
in music.
