The Neopolitan chord is one of the sadder sounding things in the world when used right.

 

Try this in G Minor...

 

before ending your cadence Gm 6/4- D7- Gm

throw in an AFlat major chord, preferably with the 3rd in the bass, right before that Gm 6/4 (5th in the bass).

 

This is called a Neopolitan 6. The great thing about this is it's almost tailor made for MINOR keys. So it will inevitably sound reeeeeally sad. Mozart pioneered this move.

 

To use this in any key, just build a major chord with the 3rd in the bass on the flat 2nd scale degree, and use it before the key chord in the 6/4 position.
