Members GorillaLover
So I've really been enjoying my Hughes and Kettner Tube 20.. but it seems as though it's starting to distort at lower volume levels than before.. losing clarity.. and I'm thinking the tubes probably need to be changed.. I need as much clean headroom as I can get from this puppy.. Any input is greatly appreciated!
Members guitarchris
How long has it been since you changed the tubes??? I would start there. Tubes aren't that expensive and I concider them regular maintainance and replace them about every 8 months to a year depending on $ and mood/sound. Members therhodeo
I just put JJ's into my Classic 30 and it basically pulled the blanket off my amp. So much clearer and defined.
Members AbbeSauniere
Try a lower gain preamp tube like a 12AU7. Or if you have an extra speaker cab or a more efficient speaker lying around.
Members GorillaLover
I've been driving my 4x12 with it as well.. it does a good job..I have some lower gain tubes in my Marshall DSL's preamp.. but I've promised them to the buyer of it.. so I need to get some new ones I should ahve kept them for myself.. they are NOS 12AU7 and 12AV7s I believe

Members wednesdaysworse
All 3 of my amps are EL-84 based and I've had success with using JJ's. Bob at Eurotubes has been very helpful with recommendations: http://www.eurotubes.com/index.htm I also like a 12AY7 in V1. The 12AV7 you mentioned is also an interesting substitute. I tried Ei Elite EL-84's in my Fender Pro Jr. and like them so far. I also upgraded to a Jensen speaker, which refined the sound a bit, too. Members RoboPimp
typically EL84 amps go through tubes a lot faster than most other amps, 6 months to a year with regular use.

Members gorebuc
Yeah, talk to Bob at Eurotubes. He set me up with some EL-84's for my Pro Jr. that, combined with a 12AT7 in V1, allow me to get a decent clean sound above 5. From what I understand, thats quite a feat on a factory biased Pro Jr.
