Members gatordoc
I've been thinking about getting the ICBM but was curious about the DAM Rams Head muff as well. So what is the difference in tone between an IC muff and a Rams Head? Important differences to me would be warmth, sustain, gain, tightness, noise. clarity. Thanks. Members EmielJ
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Ramhead has more gain, tightness clarity and sustain. Doesn't a IC Muff sound more like the green one and the Ramhead like the black?
Members Seth Carmody
Well, the IC Muff was designed to address the shortcomings of the transistor Muff in cutting through a band mix. Reputedly the IC can sound a little lackluster compared to a Ram's Head in a bedroom setting (or recording) but having never had a Ram's Head to compare, the IC Muff sounds fine. So, basically the consensus is Ram's Head for recording, IC for live playing. Try searching "triangle muff". There was a thread recently where a forumite with basically every model of Big Muff released (including a Rams Head and IC) had just obtained a triangle. He'd be the one to ask. Members gil1
Don't know the ICBM, but the Ram's Head is warm, organic, has a lot of gain but stays fuzzish (not like a overdrive) can be used at low gain for a sort of fuzzfaceish thing. Members PurpleStrat
How does a Rams Head compare to a Green Muff? When I hear someone describe a Rams Head it sounds like they are describing what my Green Muffs sound like.

Members gil1
I've had 1. a Bobble Muff (Very gainy, that almost Synth lead thing)2. a Russian Black (Similar gainy synth leady, but fatter and more defined and a bit quieter.3 A Ram's Head The Ram's head was just tons more organic, much more than I expected. Like you take a Fuzz Face and just keep going, but don't go to the synth lead thing. It grabs that mossy Fuzz Face sound and doesn't let go, from lowest gain to highest. If that makes any sense. Members gatordoc
Thanks guys. I'm actually looking for something to use in the studio for recording so the Rams Head may be the better way to go. I don't need to cut through the mix. Might check out the Mayo as well. Listening to the clips of the ICBM it almost sounds TOO massive for recording! Still love that one Floyd clip of the Gainster's though.
