Members walk_through_wa
i was at big indie rave last night and saw {censored}disco play. The guitarist was playing this les paul shape beast covered in dials that seemed to control either actual pitch or feedback pitch. I've had a look about but the above is the best picture i can find. Anybody know what it is?
Members TIKILOCKEDOUT
It's a heavily modified guitar, it's not an original unit that's for sure ... if the picture was more clear I could try and make out the headstock but alas!
Members tim gueguen
No, that guitar is largely stock from the look of it. Its a Roland GS500 guitar, part of the Roland GR500 guitar synth system, Roland's first guitar synth. Can't tell from the picture if its actually got a cable for the GR system attached. Its very similar to Ibanez and Greco Les Paul copies of the era, being made by Fujigen Gakki, but with the GR electronics installed. You can read about the GR500 here. Recordings of the GR500 are pretty slim. Edgar Froese supposedly used on on Tangerine Dream's album Cyclone. The synth noises on the Police's "Walking on the Moon" are from a GR500. Manuel Gottsching of Ashra/Ash Ra Temple fame owns one, but I have no idea which albums he might have used it on. Jeff Beck and Alex Lifeson of Rush owned them but I've seen no indication they ever actually recorded with them.

Nice one Tim ... you may well be right, as I had completely forgotten about the Roland Guitars ... love Edgar Froese too and didn't know he used them. I must admit though it's a clunky hunk of wood and really looks like a bodgy unit which is why I immediately assumed major modification!
