Members utterhack
I pulled out the ol' DS-1 last night, and darn if it didn't sound pretty good. Is something wrong with me?
Members GuyaGuy
here's the thing about the DS-1...it doesn't matter if it sounds great or not. it's just the DS-1. an old standard. a classic if you will. not to mention orange.
Members Tonemeister87
Most mass-produced pedals sound below average when they're stock.

That's actually why I picked it up in the first place. At the time, it seemed like there was only one decent setting, maybe two, and oh well hey at least now I know the DS-1. But it's revealing hidden depths. Meanwhile, I suddenly can't coax anything but shrill from the trusty RAT. Darn fickle ears...

Darn fickle ears... that's the funny thing. it's known as a one-trick pony but lotsa different players use it: grungers, blues guys, metalheads, utterhacks, et al. Members The Friendly Ranger
Yep, it all depends on the amp. I think it sounds better with British-voiced or darker amps. It sounded like crap with my DRRI but not so bad with my Dr. Z.

Also, I remember with just the right settings between the amp and the DS-1, I got some pretty wicket fuzz tones out of an old crappy solid state Champion 110. Members orourke
I have a Keeley modded DS-1 that I can't keep off my pedalboard. I've spent hundreds of dollars trying to replace it with boutique boxes, but it alway's ends up back on the board. It sounds best with an Les Paul going through two loud tube amps.....but then again most things do.

Yeah, you're right. The amp's volume is a definite factor. Now that I think of it, my DRRI was really thin at low volume but cranked all the way it got fat and unfortunately, farty. Members jackpotjewell
It's not exactly the same, but I recently pulled out my old DS-2 and sure enough...really liked it. This is after I've spent hundreds of dollars looking for "the" distortion. I think there's just something about Boss pedals that make me really want to step on them. Members Tonemeister87
I also have a modded DS-1 that hasn't come off the board since I got it back. That was about 1 year ago. Great pedal for leads due to it's chewy fatness
Members Tonemeister87
I will say this: A modded DS-1 sounds NOTHING like a stock one. In my case, it was a completely different pedal. House the circuit in a boutique looking one and it would be on a hell of a lot more boards IMO.

I was running it through the tweed BJ last night, and that was probably the difference. Too bad I already agreed to sell it. Where, oh where, shall I ever find another...? Members thepoisonchef
i enjoy this pedal through my hot rod deville the most out of several others such as ibanez ds7, boss ds2, line6 ubermetal, boss metal zone, the rat, big muff, bad monkey... i dont know why i like the highs and the 2 knobs ez enuff i just turn em all the way up and BAM the crisp crunch is there (through my epiphone sheraton 2)

Yeah, that's the way it usually goes. You decide to sell something and as you're cleaning it up and checking it to make sure it still works you remember why you bought it all those years ago before you put it in the closet. I've had that happen alot but I get over it....well, except for the Claption Strat and the MIJ Tele and the DC-2 and maybe the AM Clone and the OD-1 I sold for $40..... Its the DS-1. replace "DS-1" in the above quote with whatever pedal you're looking at/playing through/thinking about buying/selling/etc, for one of the most important axioms of life w/ guitar gear. Members Mickaroony
My only complaint about the DS-1 is sometimes I find it a little harsh, and if I try and roll off the top more I lose the lovely midrange grind.
