Members Seth Carmody
A compressor is used to control your picking dynamics mainly. If you're a sloppy player (like me ) then it can helpful to hide those embarassing volume fluctations than can result from mistakes, like if you pick a note in an appegio harder than the other. This will also work for lead. Compressors also often increase sustain - they'll boost the volume of a decaying note, giving the impression of it ringing out longer than ususal. Usually you don't want a compressor to affect your sound, but in some country music styles the 'compressor' sound has become a standard. I've never really seen much need for compression on distorted guitar, as it's usually pretty compressed anyway.
Members Coach
I too don't beleive compressor has a place with a distorted sound. I use mine to fatten up my single coils and diminish hybrid picking volume fluctuations. If I had a lower watt amp that I could get up to a good volume at home I wouldn't use one, but it really helps give a solid sound at low volumes. Members Johansolo
so this would be good for the framus clean channel and guitar with single coils? i play at bedroom levels which kinda sucks coz this amp sound better and better when you turn it up. I'd hate to make the generalization that compressors bring low volume tones alive but with what I've been using and to my ears it's really fattened up my low volume signal like it would naturally when it's opened it up a little. I love Television-like clean tones, very big and bell like, and light compression gets me there to a T. So ya, clean and single coils can benefit from a good compressor. Members Johansolo
yeah i wouldnt mind getting one...the framus clean channel is really really clean but its a bit dry and i feel it needs something...maybe reverb im a big fan of glassy/3d/bell/chime cleans...which is what my strat build with APS2 single coils is for when i finally finish it
