Boss RC-20XL Loop Station

Hey, I have a few general questions about this thing. It sounds like it could be a really useful learning and writing tool for someone who has no band.

My first question is how does it record guitar: is it direct in or do you have to use a microphone? Or can you do both? And if that's the case, does one method sound better than the other? Also, most importantly, how is the sound quality when you play it back?

My other question: in general, is this thing any good? Is there a better alternative for a similar price? Is it any better than the much smaller Boss RC-2 Loop Station Effect Pedal? Thanks for your help!

Hmm. What do you mean? You play electric guitar? You just plug it in. You play acoustic guitar with a mic? You just plug it in. You sing? You just plug the mic in. (Theres two inputs, one for guitar, one for mic, with individual volume controls for each). The sound quality is good, never noticed anything.

And I'd think that the RC20XL is easier to use than RC-2. I've had no problems with my RC20XL what so ever, I've used it for 8 months or so.

I have another (stupid) question. Do you have to create a small looping pattern or can you just play a full three minute chord progression and solo over that? Or say you create a loop and you want it to play four times and then move on to a different chord progression, is that possible? Could you create a whole song with this thing?

It may seem self-explanitory but I've never used anything like this before, so...

Ok.

1) yes, you can create a three minute loop. The Boss Loop Station has something like 16 minutes of recording time. Your loops can be anywhere from like half a second to several minutes (up to that 16 min i guess, if only one layer and with no saved loops).

2) Yes. You can switch between (up and down) on 11 saved loops (which in turn can off course have several layers of sounds), but you'll have to buy a dual footswitch to be able to scroll through the saved loops, like this: http://www.zzounds.com/item--ROLFS6

(If you don't have a footswitch, you can scroll through the saved loops by hand, theres a dial on the pedal). You can also control how the loop ends/switches to another loop, you can have it switch instantly, at the end of the loop or fade-out. So technically it is possible to have a whole song in there.

Anone know if the Digitech Jamman has the ability to scroll between loops in the same way as this ?

I need to get a looper for home use and I am 50:50 on either the Boss or the Digitech !!:)

going to return it also. I am going to try the E.H. 2880

:)

It would be more helpful if you stated why you returned those two units. Did you think that had bad sound quality; to difficult to loop, not enough memory, you didn't like the color of the box?...
