Members petejt
I suppose alot of you might have no idea what I mean by Monkey Magic.... Anyway it's an old cult-tv show from the late 1970s, a Japanese show, dubbed in English. It's of an old Chinese story called "Journey to the West". Really awesome story, and entertaining in many ways. Anyway, since this show has lots of evil demons and baddies, it has some pretty spooky incidental music. It has a really spooky synth sound that I'd love to re-create, but I don't know what effect unit in particular can do it. Here's the 1st synth soundhttp://www.supload.com/sound_confirm.php?get=767605747.wav And here's the secondhttp://www.supload.com/sound_confirm.php?get=706892766.wav Would the ElectroHarmonix Harmonic Overtone Generator (HOG) do this? Members ZJD
I'd check into something like the Minimoog for those types of sounds. http://www.moogmusic.com/ Check out the sound samples on the site of the Little Phatty too.

Members petejt
Wait up, that Little Phatty thing is a keyboard synthesiter. Cool, but I want to find an effect unit that can make this synth sound on electric guitar.
Members petejt
Hey, I just found this from searching on that web site. I recognise some pedals are Moog, and a couple that are Line6. What are they all? And would any of them get the synth sounds that I am after? Members joncyberboy
There's an FM4 there which is kinda synthy. I hear the old Korg X-911 is the best for guitar synth stuff without getting into midi. I say that the best bet though is buy a keybaord and learn to play a bit. The thing is I want to try and create the sounds on my guitar. I do have a Yamaha keyboard just for mucking about, it's the old one my sister and I had as kids. It's got 100 voices (VERY crappy guitar voices), backing tracks, and some demo songs, also drum sounds. But I wouldn't use that for synth stuff. Anyone know the synth sound at the start of the Metallica song Phantom Lord, and also Damage Inc.? How were they done?

Members V
You might be able to do something similar to the first one with a Digitech Synth Wah. I've got one and it's not all that easy to fit into songs but it does make cool sounds like that. Basically what you're looking for is something that makes your guitar sound like a sawtooth wav and has an envelope filter. Also, combine it with some reverb or maybe a delay. Members dotlikeimpact
here's a tip: guitars don't sound like synths. i've tried extensively to make guitars sound like synths. they don't. if you want synth, play synth.

And it wont break the bank either . Ive just come home from a band practice where I was thoroughly impressed by the ability of the synth wah to make my Teisco sound like a synth monster. My particular favourite setting is the "Monster spying on the lost young girls" synth swell. Members StompboxMan
Of course there them guitar synths that can play any sampled sound. I can play a combination of some effects with LFO or self oscillation that sound like a synth. For instance a 4MS Noise Swash can play itself while your playing it. ZVEX makes pedals that sequence the created setting to repeat over and over. ZVEX also makes an analog looper called the Lo Fi Loop Junky that repeats any sound recorded into it. A Crowther Audio Prunes and Custard produces distorted filter sweep. The MOOG MuRF pedal might be the perfect guitar synth pedal. Although if I take the oscillator and LFO out of my Lovetone RingStinger into the filter and envelope of a Lovetone Meatball it is a mono synth. Can I do it that way? what will make the filter sweep?
Members Supreme Pancake
I assume your talking about the vowel like sound on the one note. You can't really get that with the HOG. As someone already said, the digitech synth wah can get that I believe as well as maybe the EHX Mirco Synth.

It was too quirky. I want something to really envelope the sound, make it go from a low to a high tone and back, sounding really thick (not thin), and glum, and gloomy, kinda like a wah-wah but not exactly like that. Members StompboxMan
To play an analog oscillator with different waveforms and an envelope follower into frequency modulation you have to wait till March to play Moog Music's FreqBox with your guitar.
