Old spooky synth Monkey Magic sounds

I suppose alot of you might have no idea what I mean by Monkey Magic....

Anyway it's an old cult-tv show from the late 1970s, a Japanese show, dubbed in English. It's of an old Chinese story called "Journey to the West". Really awesome story, and entertaining in many ways.

Anyway, since this show has lots of evil demons and baddies, it has some pretty spooky incidental music. It has a really spooky synth sound that I'd love to re-create, but I don't know what effect unit in particular can do it.

Here's the 1st synth sound

And here's the second

http://www.supload.com/sound_confirm.php?get=706892766.wav

Would the ElectroHarmonix Harmonic Overtone Generator (HOG) do this?

The thing is I want to try and create the sounds on my guitar.

I do have a Yamaha keyboard just for mucking about, it's the old one my sister and I had as kids. It's got 100 voices (VERY crappy guitar voices), backing tracks, and some demo songs, also drum sounds. But I wouldn't use that for synth stuff.

Anyone know the synth sound at the start of the Metallica song Phantom Lord, and also Damage Inc.? How were they done?

You might be able to do something similar to the first one with a Digitech Synth Wah. I've got one and it's not all that easy to fit into songs but it does make cool sounds like that. Basically what you're looking for is something that makes your guitar sound like a sawtooth wav and has an envelope filter.

Also, combine it with some reverb or maybe a delay.

Thanks for the info. Yeah the revern and delay will help.

And it wont break the bank either . Ive just come home from a band practice where I was thoroughly impressed by the ability of the synth wah to make my Teisco sound like a synth monster.

My particular favourite setting is the "Monster spying on the lost young girls" synth swell.

Synth2

SENS 1 o'clock

CONTROL 9 o'clock

RANGE 3 o'clock

Of course there them guitar synths that can play any sampled sound. I can play a combination of some effects with LFO or self oscillation that sound like a synth. For instance a 4MS Noise Swash can play itself while your playing it. ZVEX makes pedals that sequence the created setting to repeat over and over. ZVEX also makes an analog looper called the Lo Fi Loop Junky that repeats any sound recorded into it. A Crowther Audio Prunes and Custard produces distorted filter sweep. The MOOG MuRF pedal might be the perfect guitar synth pedal. Although if I take the oscillator and LFO out of my Lovetone RingStinger into the filter and envelope of a Lovetone Meatball it is a mono synth.

I think what I need is just a sweep effect, and add some phase/chorus with another pedal and use amp distortion. Can I do it that way? what will make the filter sweep?

I assume your talking about the vowel like sound on the one note. You can't really get that with the HOG. As someone already said, the digitech synth wah can get that I believe as well as maybe the EHX Mirco Synth.

I tried the Digitech Synth Wah, and it didn't produce the sound I was after. It was too quirky. I want something to really envelope the sound, make it go from a low to a high tone and back, sounding really thick (not thin), and glum, and gloomy, kinda like a wah-wah but not exactly like that.

I'll do you one better and record the hog for you using settings that come close to it.
