Members english_bob
My amp (Cornell Romany Plus- 2 12ax7, 1 6L6 power amp, 12at7 reverb driver) used to be almost silent, even cranked, but now there's a LOT of white noise as you turn up the volume. Valve on the way out? Which one?
Members comfortablynumb
A bad tube is possible, but check all the other easier things first. Different cables, guitars, whatever. Unfortunetly noise can come from anywhere. If not I'd try the preamp tubes first. They always seem like the first to go.
Members Remedy
I think a preamp tube
Members Sir H C
Pre-amp tube most likely culprit. Should be the one closest to the input jacks. Try that, if not, try another.
Members Remedy
apparently (and Im a noob to all this) preamp tubes go (die) in sequence(that is slot 1 will die first) as the most 'load' is placed on the 1st preamp tube. as Sir H C said - preamp tube 1 will be located nearest the input jack. This happened to me not long ago, so yeah check that 1st preamp tube.Hope this helped and to any experts - what is said is right isnt it ??.. The noise is the same, even with nothing plugged into the amp, so I think I'm safe to assume it's not from my board or my guitars. The amp was bought new a year ago with Groove Tubes preamp valves. Is it normal for them to wear out that quick? (it's a low-wattage amp that gets turned up pretty loud fairly frequently....)

I've had a set of JJ tubes in my Classic 20 (which gets cranked every week) for a couple years now. I messed up the tube in my Vox AD100VT (had it since Februrary) the other day just by bringing it home in the cold weather in back of a truck. Different things happen. Try replacing your preamp tubes and see if it fixes the problem. If not try the power amp tubes. Does it still do it while the reverb is turned off? Perhaps it's the reverb tube.. It would have been a nice simple "ignore" fix if it went away with the reverb turned off....still, gives me an excuse to try out the Harma cryogenically treated valves
