Members fuzzinator
Just got a Shin-ei companion (FY-2) fuzz box in the mail last night. I was expecting some gnarly, out of control fuzz, and I got a pleasant surprise. It sounds a lot like the Fuzz Factory, without the need for gating and compression to control or reduce oscillation. The Shin-ei is heavily compressed, however, but it's a toneful compression, one you might expect from a Lovetone Big Cheese. Anyhow, I just thought I would pass this on. If you're unhappy with the Fuzz Factory, and having a hard time trying to tame it, you may want to look on the bay for a Shin-ei. There are some clones out there, as well. Cheers, fellow fuzz fanatics
Members Boron
Rad - I'm trying to find the time to build one. How much can you get originals for on ebay?
Members fuzzinator
I think the Shin-ei Companion varies price wise on the Bay. I paid a little over 200 for mine, and I'm happy with that. I get the impression it's reasonably easy to clone. I'm pretty sure I saw some schematics out there on the web. Members voerking
i actually got a MidFi Glitch Computer because the Fuzz Factory wasn't nuts enough for me.i'd love to try a Shin-ei Companion at some point, though.
Members fuzzinator
Oh man. The Glitch Computer is as nutty as they come! I still haven't found a way to use it live. I love those settings where you can play a single note and get that super random arpeggiation. I think you could write a pretty mean hook or riff based on that. How do you use yours? Members voerking
i dig the arpeggiated settings you speak of. i also use it for "bass lines" playing single notes above the 12th fret on certain settings that give the (mostly) clear two octave down. i love it. Nope, this is a different guy entirely. He does amazing work: Etched boxes, great layouts, etc. I'll email him and see what he would charge. BTW, i'm fairly certain that if you buy the "bunny" clone, you'll need to correct a volume drop issue that the FY-2's have. If you solder a wire from the center lug of the gain pot to the center lug of the volume pot, that will fix the problem. I'll PM you as soon as I talk to Mark and see what he'd charge. Just make sure that you do the volume mod I mentioned. Also, if you get "adventurous", I can point you to a cool "variable filter" mod for it.
