Muff setting on the Yamaha Magicstomp

I skipped all the od's and fuzz's on the Yamaha and just use it for some of my modulation settings but a couple of days ago I accidently ended-up on a patch the emulated a BM, well, with very little tweaking, I have got a wicked muff sound that works really well in a band setting. I am really suprised, serves me right for automatically dismissing some things without trying them.

BTW, I have many different BM's, inc Rams Heads, Ic models etc etc so I'm familiar with the muff sound and this setting is as good as the best one I've heard.

I was thinking about getting one just to use the delays and modulation stuff with an acoustic guitar, but it sounds more and more like its a bag of tricks that could belong in my electric rig.

I play alot of function gigs so need quite a few different sounds on-hand. The Yamaha has replaced all my modulation pedals on my board, it could prob replace my DD-20 but I'm more than happy to keep using that.

Seems like it would be perfect for sticking on a really small board with a few dirt pedals for playing out with. I had given up on multi-effects even though I like the idea of them, but this thing sounds like it might be able to deliver.

The fuzz on the magicstomp is awesome. You can even dial in that "transparent" sounding fuzz that sounds wicked for blues.

The thing can do so much. :D It's modulation effects are the best, though. The only thing I found myself being a little disappointed in was the chorus, but you can't expect everything in the unit to be perfect.

Some people don't like the preamp, but I personally don't mind it.

Just a heads up to anyone interested in the Magicstomp. I'm sending mine back cuz it's got an awful crackling sound that will not go away. I've tried different cables and everything and it definitely the Magicstomp. Hopefully, it's just a bad one that I ended up with, we'll see how the replacement goes.

i've never heard of that.

ya gotta expect a dud once in a while.

but yeah, i actually have toyed around with the fuzz and found a cool Muff-like setting. actually, the one i liked was more like the DOD Classic Fuzz, so more rumbly and cuts thru better.

I can never seem to eliminate a certain cocked-wah-type overtone when tinkering with the UB99's Muff (aka. "Fuzz I"), but have discovered some interesting tones with its (surprisingly dynamic) overdrives and Fuzz Face emulation (aka. "Fuzz II").

The level of the Magicstomp and/or another device in your signal chain could have been too high, and something may have been clipping ... or it was, as you concluded, defective. :o

Keep in mind that aside from the presets, the Bass Magicstomp, Acoustic Magicstomp, and Magicstomp II are the same (and even the presets can be made the same using the software).

I tried other pedals in that spot in my chain and no crackle. Tried different cables with the Magicstomp in the chain, still crackle. It's sounds like a bad cable would but it is defintely the Stomp. Bad solder is my guess. Taking it into the shop tomorrow.
