Members TIKILOCKEDOUT
Just curious ... I recall we had a bit of a chat about shooting a while ago when HMC Medic was looking for a new hand gun. Anybody into collecting Milsurps or LR target shooting such as Palma, Fullbore or High Power? Members lefort_1
My shooting is much more mundane: .223 for the coyotes at a distance. 30/30 for the cougar when it gets close. My sheep will not be dinner.

Members TIKILOCKEDOUT
It's all good Lefort ... what you do is what we call Primary Production in Australia. If you are a primary producer here you don't have to pay for your gun license BUT ... you can ONLY shoot on your own land and not anywhere else unless you have satisfied the criteria - usually a reason would be target shooting or being a member of a hunting club. Our gun laws here are absurd!I'm shooting Service Rifle here with .303 Lee Enfields ( open sights ) which stems from our traditional military shoots and also Fullbore which is like US High Power ... we use .308 or 7.62mm Nato and shoot prone out to 1000 metres with peep sights only - no optical enhacement. I'm a member of the SSAA here and the NSWRA which covers all my requirements to shoot, hunt, collect etc. Here's my Lithgow SMLE that I'll be using for Service Rifle matches ... it's a 1943 No1 MKIII* fitted with heavy barrel - many heavy barrels were converted into sniper rifles during the WW2 in Australia. This is my Aussie made Omark target rifle ... 7.62mm
Members lefort_1
Nice arms Tiki. I almost picked up a 7mm Mauser at a garage sale last week for a hunnert...it would have been good to get the gun out of the hands of the meth-hhhead who was selling it. But I figured he probably didn't take good care of it, and I don't want a 7mm breachfiring in my face. My property isn't really set up for shooting, but my absentee neighbor with 300+ acres of overgrown treefarm doesn't seem to mind if I thin the coyotes once in a while. The cougar has me spooked...very quiet and hard to track. And she had two cubs this past spring. We don't need more. She took down a neighbors llama a couple months back. I'm a Milsurp shooter and collector and plan to add a Kar98K to my inventory soon ... maybe a GEW also - just hoping they haven't filed the eagles off the stock! What type of Mauser were you looking at though ... K98 or later? With regards to breech firing, you can always remote fire it on your mates land to see if it is ok ... too late now I guess. I'm planning on getting my R licence fairly soon which allows me to hunt on state forest lands whenever I like and cull ferals ... or introduced species that damage the native wildlife - we have a lot of it here but no cougers - closest we have are Dingoes. I understand the need to keep cougers away from live stock but it's a tough one too because they are native species for you guys and I like to leave the native species alone ... but it's the same with Kangaroos in Australia. Some people can't understand ( Don't like ) shooting Roos here ... but when there is a droubt on and there are thousands of them starving ... it's more humane to kill them. That's a whole OTHER thread then ... I was curious to know who the shooters were - not the non shooters or gun haters. That being said I won't get into it with you either. Ain't nothing wrong with responsible firearms usage ... it's an Olympic sport among other things.

Members gr8fuldodd
I find gun nuts scary and I generally oppose the manufacture and wide distribution of handguns or semi-automatic weapons furthermore, I don't see why anyone would oppose a week long background check but... I do feel like someday I want to own a gun not only do I want the idea that I can protect myself from certain dangers, but it also appeals to the frontiersman in me (if that makes any sense) it just seems to be a tradition to be able to use a rifle with skill when I was a kid, my dad worked for Bianchi gun leather he was the art director and was a big part of the creation of a western history museum that the owner of the Bianchi opened Bianchi was a big collector of historical firearms he had one of Wyatt Earps guns the museum was really cool especially to a kid 10 years old, me! it had this really cool display of the shoot out at the OK coral where they had these wax figures of the participants then there was this cool audio that would play as lights highlighted who was talking at the end of course, it was all shooting noises very cool they even had guns that were attached to cables that you could pick up and mess around with good times the museum was eventually sold to Gene Autry who opend the Gene Autry Western Heritage museum somewhere in Los Angeles I never visited it though
Members gr8fuldodd
and although I recognize the statistics regarding owning a gun and the likelihood it will be used on the owner, etc. I have to say that I scoff at the fact that I couldn't be a responsible gun owner I'm sorry, but I just can't bet against my own smarts! Members The Great Waldo Pepper
Mine doesn't fire. I got it from an old guy who was dying of cancer, I used to drive him to the VA all the time. Someday I will get it back into firing function. I'd really like a Glock 34. That pistol makes me into a damned good shot.
Members TIKILOCKEDOUT
What's very interesting to me is that the people I meet in shooting clubs and who are gun owners - shooter and collectors all - they are the most friendly and helpful people I've come across in any group of people in society. Not only are they responsible and friendly but they will in many cases bend over backwards to help you in any way they can. Further add to this fact that I see families out at the shoots on the weekend - mothers, fathers and kids and a REAL sense of community atmosphere and everybody is courteous and respectful of others without exception! In stark contrast ... these days in England or Australia a so-called friendly game of football or rugby - which is totally free of firearms - is more dangerous and NOT a place you want to take your kids or wife for a fun time amongst others in the community - often turns into drunk rampages, fights between fans, potential riots and general hate and abuse! At the end of the day it's not the guns that are the problem - people are. Most irresponsible firearms owners are criminals - nearly all guns used in violent acts are stolen. I have always said that responsible firearms owners, collectors and shooters should not be penalized for the actions of criminal idiots. Just because a drunk driver kills a pedestrian doesn't mean alcohol should be banned or that driving should be banned ... it's all about the user and their intent. You will find that people who are members of firearms clubs - collectors, shooters and hunters are the salt of the earth, friendly, helpful and considerate --- I'd feel safer taking my family and kids to a Rifle Club shoot on the weekends than to a game of rugby or football to be quite frank.
